Nik Antropov, who tossed his stick at officials Thursday night, has been heaved from the struggling Maple Leafs' lineup by the NHL. The top-line forward was suspended for three games for his actions at the conclusion of a 3-2 loss at Carolina. The Hurricanes scored the winning goal in overtime while Antropov was serving a hooking penalty. After exiting the penalty box, Antropov slammed his stick against the boards before tossing it toward officials . . . J.P. Dumont, who has a franchise record 16-game point streak, signed a four-year, $16 million contract extension with the Nashville Predators yesterday . . . Rodriguez wants to go by the books
Rich Rodriguez said opening the books of West Virginia's private fund-raising arm is the only way to determine whether his resignation as coach in December harmed the school financially. That was a demand in the formal response Rodriguez filed to WVU's lawsuit over the $4 million buyout clause in his contract. The WVU Foundation is not legally obligated to open its books to public scrutiny under ordinary circumstances. According to its annual report, the foundation ended fiscal 2007 with total assets of more than $1 billion and endowment investments of $474 million, a 24-percent increase over the previous year . . . South Carolina's Board of Trustees approved a tax-deferred retirement package for Steve Spurrier's contract that would pay the coach $1 million if he remains with the Gamecocks the next four seasons . . . Britt Reid, the 22-year-old son of Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid, was accepted into a drug treatment program and will be released from prison early . . .
