February 24, 2008

New York Islanders center Mike Sillinger will undergo season-ending hip surgery this week. Sillinger hasn't played since Feb. 5, when he was forced out of the lineup. The surgery will be performed in Colorado by the doctor who operated on Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro last summer, the team said. Sillinger missed New York's game at Carolina Dec. 31 and then played through the pain for 15 games before shutting it down. He has 14 goals and 12 assists . . . Minnesota Wild defenseman Nick Schultz signed a six-year, $21 million contract extension yesterday, a few months before he would have hit the market as an unrestricted free agent. The 25-year-old Schultz, who has served as the Wild's captain for January and February, is playing this season on a one-year, $1.85 million deal . . . The Toronto Maple Leafs signed forward Alex Steen to a two-year, $3.4 million contract extension . . . Jonathan Sigalet, Chris Collins, Martins Karsums, and Matt Lashoff scored to lift the Providence Bruins over the Falcons, 4-1, in Springfield.

Wizard Arenas not close to returning
For weeks, Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas has been targeting a March 2 return from knee surgery, but conceded he's not close to being ready. "If I wanted it to be, it can be realistic," Arenas said of his original goal. "But it's going to be longer to get into shape." Arenas had surgery on his left knee Nov. 21 and has been rehabilitating, but he hasn't practiced with the team . . . Charlotte Bobcats forward Gerald Wallace will miss at least two weeks after suffering his fourth concussion in four seasons Friday in a loss to Sacramento, said coach Sam Vincent . . . Devin Harris, the centerpiece of the Jason Kidd deal from the Nets' side, is at least a week away from making his New Jersey debut because of a left ankle sprain. "He can do everything north-south," coach Lawrence Frank said. "He's still working on going east-west with his lateral movement."
