Baseball
One week into his major league career, Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria is already getting the superstar treatment - and contract. Longoria, 22, whom the Rays took third overall in the 2006 amateur draft, agreed yesterday to a six-year, $17.5 million contract, a deal that could be worth up to $44.5 million over nine seasons. If he isn't sent down to the minors again, he would be guaranteed $19 million. Longoria gets $500,000 this year, but his annual salary nearly doubles throughout the contract. Tampa Bay has a $7.5 million option for 2014 with a $3 million buyout, as well as options for 2015 ($11 million) and 2016 ($11.5 million) . . . Braves pitcher Tom Glavine was placed on the disabled list for the first time in his 22-year career because of a strained right hamstring. Glavine had hoped to start today against the Dodgers, six days after leaving a start at Washington in the first inning, but he was placed on the 15-day DL retroactive to April 14 . . . Joseph Dion says he is the person identified in Jose Canseco's new book as "Max," who Canseco claims was a steroids dealer he introduced to Alex Rodriguez, Sports Illustrated reported on its website.
