Arizona Diamondbacks lefthander Doug Davis said he has been pronounced cancer-free after a sophisticated test showed no spread of the disease. Davis said he got the news from surgeon Bob Evani, who removed the pitcher's cancerous thyroid gland April 10. Davis is scheduled for rehab starts tomorrow and next Thursday before returning to the Diamondbacks . . . The Toronto Blue Jays placed shortstops David Eckstein (hip flexor) and John McDonald (ankle) on the 15-day disabled list . . . Reigning National League MVP Jimmy Rollins is expected to rejoin the Philadelphia Phillies tonight in San Francisco after missing a month with a sprained left ankle . . . Washington Nationals catcher Paul Lo Duca will be placed on the 15-day DL today with a broken right hand, and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks . . . Pistons' Billups a game-day decision
Chauncey Billups's status for Game 4 of the Detroit Pistons' Eastern Conference semifinal series tomorrow against the Orlando Magic will be a game-day decision, the team said after its star point guard spent yesterday in the trainers' room trying to recover from a hamstring strain . . . Kiki Vandeweghe was promoted to general manager of the New Jersey Nets, less than six months after being hired as a special assistant to team president Rod Thorn. Vandeweghe replaces Ed Stefanski, who left in midseason to become the GM of the 76ers . . . A man who accused Richard Jefferson of grabbing him by the throat in an incident in a Minneapolis club this year had too much to drink, the New Jersey Nets forward said. Jefferson was charged with assault Wednesday for the Jan. 27 incident . . . Shawn James, the former Northeastern standout who was one of five Duquesne players shot on campus in September 2006, is passing up his senior season to enter the NBA draft . . . West Virginia officials said men's coach Bob Huggins has been taken to a hospital in Charlotte, N.C., for precautionary reasons after tripping on an airport tarmac and hitting his head on the pavement.

Swedish prospect Fabian Brunnstrom has agreed to sign with the Dallas Stars over the Detroit Red Wings, Bruins, and other NHL suitors. The 23-year-old forward starred in the Swedish Elite League last season and was regarded as one of the top free agents available . . . Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen will likely miss the Eastern Conference finals against the Pittsburgh Penguins because of a blood clot in his ankle . . . Zach Parise's power-play goal with 8:57 remaining snapped a tie and gave the United States a 6-4 victory over Germany in a qualifying-round game at the world hockey championships in Halifax, Nova Scotia. McGinest says '08 will be final season
Browns linebacker Willie McGinest said the 2008 season will be his last. McGinest, who played 12 seasons and won three Super Bowls with the Patriots, signed a three-year, $12 million contract with the Browns in 2006. He has seven sacks and 107 tackles in 27 games for Cleveland . . . A federal judge in Richmond ordered imprisoned quarterback Michael Vick to repay more than $2.4 million to a Canadian bank for defaulting on a loan . . . Shane Mosley's fight with Zab Judah on May 31 was canceled after Judah seriously injured his arm in an accidental fall and needed 50 stitches . . . Top-ranked Justine Henin, working to recover from a knee injury, was upset by Dinara Safina, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1, in the third round of the German Open in Berlin while Serena Williams breezed to her 17th straight win, ousting Agnieszka Radwanska, 6-3, 6-1, to reach the quarterfinals . . .
