Hamm hurt in nationals; Wilson quits

Gymnastics
Paul Hamm's stay at the top of the US Championships might be a short one. Hamm said he might not compete tomorrow after injuring his right hand in the last few seconds of his parallel bars routine last night, his final event in Houston. As Hamm was flipping to do work on one bar, his right fingers caught on the rail and were jammed to the side. He fell off, and immediately grabbed his wrist as he grimaced. "I heard a small popping sound in the joint," said Hamm, who left the arena with his right arm wrapped and will have X-rays this morning. "This is not something that will make me sit out of the Olympics, but it might make me sit for [tomorrow]. If it's something very little, I'll compete. If I think it is something worse, I'll hold off until trials." Three-time Olympian Blaine Wilson's comeback ended after two events when he withdrew from the championships. Wilson, 33, said he was through with the sport. "I'm done for my career," Wilson said after dropping out following poor performances on the high bar and floor exercise. He did not come out when scheduled to compete on pommel horse, then left the arena. Wilson won the all-around national title five straight years from 1996-2000.
