May 25, 2008

It was a busy day for the Dodgers. The team placed center fielder Andruw Jones on the 15-day disabled list yesterday because of an injured right knee that will require surgery and sideline him at least 4-6 weeks. Hours before they made that move, the Dodgers purchased the contract of standout prospect Clayton Kershaw from Double A Jacksonville, and the 20-year-old lefthander is expected to make his big league debut today against the St. Louis Cardinals. Jones, who signed a two-year, $36.2 million contract last winter after 12 seasons with the Atlanta Braves, has struggled in Los Angeles, batting .165 with two homers and seven RBIs in 43 games. The Dodgers also designated Esteban Loaiza for assignment after activating the righthander from the 15-day disabled list, and they optioned righthanded reliever Yhency Brazoban to Triple A Las Vegas. Kershaw struck out 19 in 14 innings for the Dodgers during spring training and was 0-3 with a 2.28 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 43 1/3 innings with Jacksonville.

The righthander allowed six runs over two innings, hiking his ERA from 2.25 to 3.10. The Colorado Rockies placed shortstop Clint Barmes (knee) and right fielder Brad Hawpe (hamstring) on the 15-day DL.
