David Beckham's perfect curling ball set up John Terry for the go-ahead goal in the 38th minute, and England outclassed the United States, 2-0, yesterday in an exhibition game at Wembley in England. Steven Gerrard scored the second goal in the 59th minute. Landon Donovan, Beckham's Los Angeles Galaxy teammate, missed out on a chance to become the fourth-youngest player with 100 international appearances because he didn't dress (tight groin) . . . Dwayne De Rosario scored in the 93d minute and added an assist to help the Houston Dynamo tie FC Dallas, 2-2, in Frisco . . . Brian McBride is leaving Fulham of England's Premier League to return to the US.

Panthers' Delhomme takes part in drills
Eight months after Carolina quarterback Jake Delhomme grabbed his right elbow in agony, he threw about 40 passes in his latest rehabilitation milestone following ligament-replacement surgery. "It felt great," he said after taking part in team drills . . . North Carolina A&T State University senior offensive lineman Chad Wiley died from complications of heat illness, school officials said. Wiley collapsed after a voluntary workout on campus in Greensboro, N.C., Tuesday . . . Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers lineman Thomas McHale, 45, who was found dead at a friend's Tampa-area home Sunday, was using antidepression medicine (Xanax) and cocaine the night before he died, Pasco County Sheriff's authorities said . . . Former Broncos punter Todd Sauerbrun pleaded guilty in Denver to disturbing the peace in a confrontation with a taxi driver last December and was sentenced to 24 hours of community service.

Yankees place Kennedy on disabled list
The Yankees placed righthanded starter Ian Kennedy on the disabled list, a move that could speed up Joba Chamberlain's move into the starting rotation. Kennedy strained a muscle near his right rib cage in his start Tuesday against the Orioles. Manager Joe Girardi said Kennedy also has bursitis in his right shoulder blade . . . Also on the DL: Blue Jays catcher Gregg Zaun (mild strain and inflammation in the right elbow); Cardinals pitcher Joel Pineiro (strained right groin) . . . Mets ace Pedro Martínez (strained left hamstring) pitched six sharp innings in a Class A start in Port St. Lucie, Fla., staying on track to return to the majors next week. Martínez (two runs, four hits) took the loss as Vero Beach beat St. Lucie, 2-0 . . . Slumping Reds center fielder Corey Patterson was optioned to Triple A Louisville, with Cincinnati hoping he'll work his way out of an 0-for-18 slump that dropped his average to .200 . . . Bret Boone, 39, has decided to retire again after a brief minor league stint in the Nationals' farm system . . . Commissioner Bud Selig announced the Los Angeles Angels will host the 2010 All-Star Game July 13.

NASCAR doles out harsh penalties
NASCAR handed down its most severe penalties yet on its new car when the crew chiefs and car chiefs for Scott Riggs and Johnny Sauter were suspended six races apiece for tampering with the rear wings on their Chevrolets last weekend at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte, N.C. Crew chiefs Bootie Barker and Dave Skog were fined $100,000 each. Car chiefs Derick Jennings and Thomas Harris were not fined but their suspensions are unprecedented. Riggs and Sauter were each docked 150 driver points. Both cars are fielded by Haas-CNC Motorsports, which was docked 150 owner points for each car.

Track and field
Graham jury deadlocked on 2 counts
The jury in San Francisco deliberating the fate of track coach Trevor Graham has reached a verdict on one count, but is "hopelessly deadlocked" on the other two. Jurors wrapped up their first full day of deliberations telling the judge they had reached a verdict on the charge relating to Graham telling IRS agents in 2004 he had not talked to admitted steroids dealer Angel Heredia by phone since about 1997. But they said they were deadlocked on charges relating to Graham denying he set up his athletes with drugs from Heredia and that he never met Heredia in person. Deliberations resume today.

Cannons pick Rabil of Johns Hopkins
Picking first in the Major League Lacrosse collegiate draft, the Boston Cannons selected midfielder Paul Rabil from Final Four team Johns Hopkins. Rabil led the Blue Jays with 36 goals, to go with 14 assists for a team-leading 50 points. The nation's leading scorer, Matt Danowski (41 goals, 56 assists) of Duke, went to the New Jersey Pride second . . . The honors are piling up for Boston University's Sarah Dalton. The America East Player of the Year was named to the WomensLax.com All-American team. Earlier this month, the Cornwall, Vt., native received Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association Northeast All-Region honors . . . The Dallas Stars signed defenseman Trevor Daley to a three-year, $6.9 million contract . . . Clemson football coach Tommy Bowden will earn yearly guaranteed compensation of $1.83 million and his basketball counterpart, Oliver Purnell, will earn at least $775,000 under their new extensions, which both run through the 2014 season . . . NBA Coach of the Year Byron Scott and the New Orleans Hornets have agreed in principle to a contract extension . . . Chicago Bulls forward Joakim Noah was charged with possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana and for having an open container of alcohol early Sunday in downtown Gainesville, Fla., and received six months' probation and a $200 fine.
