Russians beat Netherlands to advance
Russia scored two goals in extra time to advance to the semifinals of the European Championship with a 3-1 upset win over the Netherlands yesterday in Basel, Switzerland. Dimitry Torbinski and Andrei Arshavin scored within five minutes of each other in the second half of extra time. Roman Pavlyuchenko also scored for Russia, while Ruud van Nistelrooy scored for the Dutch in the 86th . . . The United States won the Peace Queen Cup tournament in Suwon, South Korea, beating Canada, 1-0, on a 92d-minute goal by Angela Hucles. Goalkeeper Hope Solo made two game-preserving saves at the end of the match for the American women, who tuned up for the Beijing Olympics by winning their fourth tournament of the year.

Georgia clinches spot in CWS finals
Rich Poythress tied a College World Series record with three doubles, Ryan Peisel hit a three-run homer, and Georgia withstood Stanford's ninth-inning comeback to advance to the championship round with a 10-8 victory in Omaha. Georgia awaits the Fresno State-North Carolina winner after Chad Flack's monster two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning kept the Tar Heels alive with a 4-3 win over the Bulldogs. The teams meet again tonight, with the winner advancing to play Georgia in the best-of-three finals that start tomorrow . . . A day after being hit in the head with a line drive, Toronto's Roy Halladay said that he was fine and would not miss his next start. The news wasn't as good for fellow Blue Jays starter Shaun Marcum, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right elbow . . . The Cubs placed pitcher Carlos Zambrano on the 15-day DL because of a shoulder strain. The move is retroactive to June 19 . . . Longtime executive Wayne Krivsky was hired by the New York Mets as special assistant to general manager Omar Minaya. Krivsky was fired as GM of the Reds in late April . . . David Pauley pitched seven strong innings to improve to 9-2 and lead the PawSox past visiting Columbus, 6-2.Auto racing
Funny Car driver Kalitta killed in crash
Scott Kalitta died when his Funny Car crashed and burst into flames during qualifying for the Lucas Oil NHRA SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J. Kalitta, 46, of Palmetto, Fla., a two-time Top Fuel champion who had 18 career victories, was traveling at an estimated speed of 300 miles per hour when the crash occurred . . . Carl Edwards shoved his fellow Sprint Cup series standout Clint Boyer sideways with 25 laps to go, then held off Joey Logano at the Milwaukee Mile for his first Nationwide victory of the season . . . Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa led Ferrari 1-2 in qualifying for the French Grand Prix in Magny Cours.
Blake, Erholtz rule Mount Washington
Eric Blake of New Britain, Conn., and Brandy Erholtz of Bailey, Colo., won the 48th Mount Washington Road Race in New Hampshire. Blake, the 2006 winner, finished the grueling 7.6-mile, all-uphill run in 1 hour 39 seconds to fight off an intense challenge from first-timer Clint Wells of Superior, Colo. Wells finished 11 seconds behind. In the women's division, Erholtz, a newcomer, took the lead in the first mile over the favored Laura Haefeli of Del Norte, Colo., and held on to win. Erholtz won in 1:11:08, while Kasie Enman of Huntington, Vt., overtook Haefeli to claim second in 1:13:26 . . . Troy Dumais and Christina Loukas earned the first two spots on the American diving team for the Beijing Games by winning the US trials in Indianapolis. Dumais completed a dominating performance in 3-meter springboard to secure his third trip to the Olympics. Chris Colwill was second. Loukas scored 1092.10 points, well ahead of runner-up Nancilea Foster (1002.85). The rest of the squad will be named next month . . . Agnieszka Radwanska won her third WTA title of the year, beating Nadia Petrova, 6-4, 6-7 (9-11), 6-4, in the final of the Eastbourne International Women's Open in England . . . David Ferrer won his first grass-court title by defeating Marc Gicquel, 6-4, 6-2, at the Ordina Open in Den Bosch, Netherlands.
