Double amputee's quest comes to end

Double-amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius was left off South Africa's 4 x 400-meter relay team yesterday, ending his hopes of running in the Beijing Games. Pistorius couldn't hit the 400-meter qualifying time of 45.55 seconds, despite running a personal-best 46.25 Wednesday at a meet in Lucerne, Switzerland . . . In an Olympic tuneup meet in Saint-Denis, France, Jeremy Wariner had the year's fastest time in the 400 meters, finishing in 43.86 seconds, edging fellow American LaShawn Merritt (44.35).

Gymnast Worley suffers broken leg
Shayla Worley broke her right fibula just below the knee during warm-ups for the Olympic selection camp in New Waverly, Texas, essentially ending her chances of making the US women's gymnastics team. She fought back tears as she left the gym on crutches with her right leg in a protective boot. "It's unlikely she'd be able to compete" in Beijing, said Scott Rand, a team physician . . . In Athens, the Raptors' Carlos Arroyo had 17 points to spark Puerto Rico to an 81-70 victory over Slovenia for a spot in the semifinals of the Olympic qualifying tournament that will award three berths for Beijing. In other quarterfinal games, Marco Popovic scored 17 points to give Croatia an 83-62 win over Canada; the Mavericks' Dirk Nowitzki scored 20 points to lead Germany past Brazil, 78-65; and Greece routed New Zealand, 75-48.

Sabres lock up Miller with extension
The Sabres locked up franchise goalie Ryan Miller with a five-year, $31.25 million extension, ending speculation that he might be gone after next season when his old contract would have expired. Miller, who turned 28 Thursday, will make $6.25 million each year through the 2013-14 season . . . The Penguins' march to the Stanley Cup finals has paid off for coach Michel Therrien, who agreed to a new three-year contract.

Packers president backs GM, coach
Packers president Mark Murphy restated his support for general manager Ted Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy in the standoff with quarterback Brett Favre. Murphy attended a meeting of the team's executive committee but was not available for comment afterward. Team spokesman Aaron Popkey said Murphy has "full confidence" in how Thompson and McCarthy are handling the matter. Favre has changed his mind about retiring; the Packers won't grant his request for his release . . . Former Boston College cornerback DeJuan Tribble, a sixth-round pick, agreed to a four-year contract with the Chargers. The team also agreed to a four-year deal with third-round pick Jacob Hester from Louisiana State . . . The Jets signed Purdue tight end Dustin Keller, the 30th pick, to a multiyear contract . . . Safety DaJuan Morgan, the Chiefs' third-round draft pick out of North Carolina State, agreed to a three-year contract . . . Second-round draft pick Devin Thomas, a wide receiver out of Michigan State, signed a $4.83 million, four-year contract with the Redskins . . . Jaguars wide receiver Jerry Porter had surgery to repair a torn hamstring tendon and will miss the preseason.

Serena Williams cruises into semifinals
Top-seeded Serena Williams advanced to the semifinals of the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, Calif., by routing Patty Schnyder, 6-3, 6-1. Ai Sugiyama won her quarterfinal over Dominika Cibulkova, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-5), 5-3 (retired). Cibulkova stopped playing because of cramping in her left leg with Sugiyama serving at 40-0, 5-3 in the third set . . . Venus Williams and Lindsay Davenport withdrew from next week's East West Bank Classic in Carson, Calif., with both citing right knee injuries . . . Nationals outfielder Wily Mo Peña went on the 15-day disabled list because of an injured left shoulder that will require surgery . . . Point guard Deron Williams officially signed a contract extension that will keep him with the Jazz through the 2011-12 season . . . Lakers forward Luke Walton underwent surgery to remove bone spurs and cartilage debris from his right ankle . . . Marreese Speights, taken 16th in June's draft, signed with the 76ers . . . Oklahoma City signed restricted free agent guard C.J. Miles to an offer sheet. The Jazz have seven days to match the multiyear offer . . . The Lakers did not match the Warriors' offer for restricted free agent forward Ronny Turiaf . . . In WNBA action, Jia Perkins scored 15 points and the Chicago Sky handed visiting Connecticut its fifth straight loss, 73-65. Sheryl Swoopes scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds in visiting Seattle's 65-59 win over Indiana. Deanna Nolan scored 26 points as Detroit cruised past host Washington, 99-62.
