Rob Murray, assistant coach the past five seasons in Providence (AHL), yesterday was promoted to the Baby B's top job, replacing Scott Gordon, who last week was named coach of the New York Islanders. Murray, 41, came to Providence as Gordon's assistant in 2003 and helped shape the Baby B's into perennial playoff contenders. Last season, the Gordon-Murray-led Bruins finished with the AHL's best regular-season mark (55-18-3).

Rising 'Idle': Yankees to start Pavano
Carl Pavano will start for the Yankees tomorrow at Baltimore. The 32-year-old signed a $39.95 million, four-year contract with the Yankees before the 2005 season but injuries to his shoulder, back, buttocks, elbow, and ribs have limited him to 19 appearances. On the disabled list all season following elbow ligament replacement surgery in June last year, Pavano has been dubbed "American Idle" by New York tabloids . . . Ryan Church, sidelined by postconcussion syndrome since July 5, could be in the Mets' outfield against Houston tonight.

Jackson signs back in for six years
A day after ending a monthlong holdout, Steven Jackson signed a six-year, $44 million contract and was on the field for practice with the Rams. The running back had been entering the final season of a five-year, $7 million deal he signed in 2004. The deal puts him third on the salary scale on the team and fifth among NFL running backs. Jackson has averaged 115.7 yards from scrimmage since his rookie year, fourth best in the NFL . . . The Steelers signed linebacker James Farrior to a five-year, $18.2 million extension. Farrior was signed through this season, but the 12-year veteran had hoped to sign an extension that would keep him in Pittsburgh until he retired . . . Ravens running back Willis McGahee, currently limited to running in a swimming pool as he recuperates from arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, is targeting the Sept. 7 season opener against Cincinnati for his return . . . J.T. O'Sullivan completed 7 of 8 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown in limited time as the San Francisco 49ers beat the host Chicago Bears, 37-30, in an exhibition game. Bears backup linebacker Rod Wilson suffered a broken right forearm in the third quarter . . . Texans fullback Jameel Cook was arrested and charged with marijuana possession Wednesday . . . Eight Georgia Southern players were suspended for the season opener against No. 1 Georgia for undisclosed violations of school rules.

Venus, Serena could clash in quarters
Venus and Serena Williams would meet in the quarterfinals of the US Open, a bit earlier than their matchup in the final of the last major, Wimbledon, which was won by Venus. On the men's side, struggling four-time defending champ Roger Federer might have to get through No. 3 Novak Djokovic to reach the final . . . There were two upsets at the Pilot Pen in New Haven. Second-seeded Daniela Hantuchova lost, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, to Alize Cornet, and Caroline Wozniacki defeated third-seeded Marion Bartoli, 6-4, 6-0. Top seed Anna Chakvetadze and former world No. 1 Amelie Mauresmo also advanced.
