The Kansas City Royals placed third baseman Alex Gordon on the 15-day disabled list yesterday with a torn muscle in his right quadriceps, the fourth Royals player to go on the DL in four days. Righthander Luke Hochevar (bruised right rib cage), outfielder Mitch Maier (broken cheekbone), and lefthanded reliever Ron Mahay (plantar fasciitis in his left foot) all went on the DL in the last three days. Kansas City activated infielder Alberto Callaspo, who went on the disabled list on June 28 for undisclosed medical reasons one day after he was arrested for driving under the influence . . . The New York Mets temporarily shelved their plans to activate Luis Castillo, reportedly to give the second baseman more time to rest his strained left hip flexor . . . The Detroit Tigers plan to call up former Boston College pitcher Chris Lambert from Triple A Toledo to start Tuesday against Cleveland in his major league debut . . . The Phillies placed outfielder Geoff Jenkins on the 15-day DL with a strained right hip flexor and purchased infielder Andy Tracy's contract from Triple A Lehigh Valley. Jenkins injured his hip while beating out an infield single in the third inning Friday night against the Los Angeles Dodgers . . . The Atlanta Braves activated reliever Manny Acosta and optioned righthander Matt DeSalvo to Triple A Richmond . . . The Red Wings rallied with three runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Pawtucket Red Sox, 4-3, in Rochester, N.Y.
Hawaii vs. Mexico in LLWS title game
Tanner Tokunaga doubled home two runs with the bases loaded and two outs to cap a six-run sixth that gave Hawaii a come-from-behind 7-5 win over Louisiana to advance to the Little League World Series title game in South Williamsport, Pa. Waipahu, Hawaii, trailed, 5-1, entering the sixth before its dramatic rally. Hawaii will play Matamoros, Mexico, for the World Series championship after Mexico defeated Tokyo, 5-4, in the earlier game.

Anna Chakvetadze, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, in the final of the Pilot Pen, a US Open tuneup in New Haven. The 18-year-old Dane hadn't even been in a WTA final before August. She got her first WTA Tour victory in Stockholm, then reached the third round at the Olympics, where she lost to eventual gold-medalist

Madrid: Robinho can buy out contract

Robinho can terminate his contract and join Chelsea but suggested he will have to pay a large sum to do so. Reacting to Robinho's stated desire to switch clubs, Calderon said it may not be necessary for Robinho to pay the sum specified in the buyout clause in his contract - $177 million. Calderon said the Brazil forward must write to Madrid of his desire to end his contract. Madrid has already rejected a $47 million bid from Chelsea, although Robinho's agent,
Wagner Ribeiro, suggested a $59 million offer from Stamford Bridge could still seal the deal. Robinho has reportedly been annoyed by the Spanish club's refusal to allow him to play at the Olympics . . .
Andriy Shevchenko's miserable spell at Chelsea is nearing an end after AC Milan agreed to re-sign the striker if he passes a medical examination tomorrow. The Washington Glory scored five runs in the first inning en route to an 11-2 victory over the New England Riptide in the National Pro Fastpitch Softball League playoffs in Kimberly, Wis.
