Relatives of Bonds's trainer scrutinized

Federal prosecutors are considering charging the wife and mother-in-law of Barry Bonds's personal trainer in an effort to pressure Greg Anderson to testify against the slugger during his perjury trial, The New York Times reported yesterday. A lawyer representing Anderson's wife, Nicole Gestas, and others familiar with the matter told the newspaper that prosecutors are considering charging her and her mother, Madeleine Gestas, with tax-related crimes. Anderson spent more than a year in prison after refusing to testify before a federal grand jury investigating Bonds for perjury.

Stairs says he's headed to Phillies
The Philadelphia Phillies and Toronto Blue Jays were working to complete a trade that would send veteran lefthanded hitter Matt Stairs to the Phillies. Neither Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi nor Phillies GM Pat Gillick would confirm the trade was official, but Stairs told the Canadian Press he was headed to Chicago to join the Phillies for their series against the Cubs. Stairs is batting .250 with 11 homers and 44 RBIs . . . New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi said it's likely that pitcher Joba Chamberlain will pitch out of the bullpen when he returns from the disabled list . . . Baltimore Orioles pitcher Daniel Cabrera began serving his six-game suspension for throwing at the head of the Yankees' Alex Rodriguez June 29 . . . Kansas City Royals first-round draft pick Eric Hosmer can't play until the Pittsburgh Pirates settle their dispute with their first-round selection, No. 2 overall pick Pedro Alvarez, and the Players Association. Alvarez's agent, Scott Boras, claimed his contract agreement was reached after the midnight deadline for draft picks to sign on Aug. 15. The Players Association filed a grievance claiming the deadline was extended by Major League Baseball without the union's permission. Pirates president Frank Coonelly said the agreement between the Royals and No. 3 pick Hosmer was submitted to MLB after Alvarez's deal . . . Two Yankees pitchers and one Cubs pitcher from the Dominican Summer League were each suspended 50 games for testing positive for banned performance-enhancing drugs under baseball's minor league program. Justo Arias and Rafael Martinez of the Yankees tested positive for metabolites of stanozolol. Jhon Rodriguez of the Cubs tested positive for metabolites of nandrolone . . . Nashua Pride owner John Stabile is putting the Can-Am League team up for sale and said the only way it will remain in the city is if he finds a buyer who wants to keep it there.

Spurs' Ginobili to have ankle surgery
San Antonio Spurs guard Manu Ginobili, who helped lead Argentina to a bronze medal in the Beijing Olympics, will need surgery to repair a ligament injury in his left ankle. The Spurs said Ginobili will have surgery next week. The team will announce a timeline for his return after the surgery. Ginobili led the Spurs in scoring last season (19.5 points per game) and won the NBA's Sixth Man Award . . . Former Seattle SuperSonics owner Howard Schultz said he's dropping his lawsuit against new team owner Clay Bennett, ending an attempt to regain ownership of the team that has moved to Oklahoma City . . . The New York Knicks acquired Patrick Ewing Jr. in a trade with the Rockets. New York sent the rights to center Frederic Weis to Houston in exchange for the son of former Knicks star Patrick Ewing.

Bolt proves he's up to speed in Zurich
Usain Bolt easily won the 100 meters in 9.83 seconds in the Weltklasse meet in Zurich, his first competition since record-shattering performances in the Beijing Olympics. Bolt's return was upstaged by Pamela Jelimo, the 18-year-old Kenyan who won the women's 800 in 1 minute 54.01 seconds, the fastest time in more than two decades and the third fastest in history at the distance. . . Eight years after Sydney hosted the 2000 Summer Olympics, officials with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra acknowledged their stirring performance at the opening ceremony was entirely prerecorded. The revelation followed an international uproar over China's decision to pass off the voice of a 7-year-old singer as that of another girl at this year's opening ceremony . . . Fabian Espindola scored both goals in host Real Salt Lake's 2-0 win over the Colorado Rapids in MLS action . . . The Ottawa Senators traded defenseman Andrej Meszaros to Tampa Bay for defensemen Filip Kuba and Alexandre Picard and a first-round pick in 2009.
