Cowboys clear Jones to play Sunday

Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said yesterday that cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones will play Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, and owner Jerry Jones said the team didn't plan any discipline after the player got into a scuffle with his bodyguard Tuesday night in the bathroom of an upscale Dallas hotel. Police were called, but there were no arrests or charges filed. "I am very disappointed in that we're having to deal with this," Jerry Jones said. Commissioner Roger Goodell said the league was investigating the matter. He said he didn't speak with Adam Jones individually during a previously scheduled meeting with the entire Cowboys team Wednesday night. "I'm disappointed that we're even discussing this at this point in time," Goodell said . . . The Browns are sending tight end Kellen Winslow to the doctor for tests after he missed his second straight day of practice with an unspecified "illness." Browns coach Romeo Crennel says Winslow has been sick for two days and would not say if he would play in Monday night's game against the Giants . . . Former Broncos running back Travis Henry was released from a Denver jail after posting a $400,000 bond on federal drug charges.

Edwards, Harvick resort to fighting
Witnesses said Carl Edwards and Kevin Harvick scuffled in the Nationwide Series garage at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C., after Edwards walked into Harvick's garage stall and the two engaged in a heated argument. Harvick appeared to walk away but, witnesses said, Edwards reached for his shoulder to turn him around. Harvick then shoved Edwards, who stumbled onto the hood of Harvick's car, and the two had to be separated. Witnesses claimed a member of Harvick's crew had Edwards in a headlock as numerous people tried to separate the two. Edwards instigated a 12-car crash at Talladega last Sunday that included Harvick . . . The US Army is joining Ryan Newman next year, switching its Sprint Cup Series sponsorship to Stewart-Haas Racing from Dale Earnhardt Inc. The Army's star logo will appear on Newman's No. 39 Chevrolet for 23 races in 2009.

Malarchuk accidentally shoots self
Clint Malarchuk, a former goalie best known for having his jugular vein slashed by a skate in a 1989 game, is recovering after accidentally shooting himself in the chin with a rifle in Minden, Nev. His wife, Christy, told sheriff's deputies that the .22-caliber rifle discharged after her 47-year-old husband placed the butt on the ground between his legs. He had been shooting rabbits . . . The San Jose Sharks released Jeff Friesen from a tryout contract, ending the veteran forward's comeback bid a few hours before the club's season opener against Anaheim . . . The Columbus Blue Jackets placed center Manny Malhotra (lower body injury) on injured reserve and recalled right wing Derek Dorsett from Syracuse (AHL).

Burgos remains in jail for own safety
Mets pitcher Ambiorix Burgos will be jailed for three months in Nagua, Dominican Republic, while awaiting trial for a hit-and-run accident that killed two women. The 24-year-old reliever told the Associated Press that a judge ordered him to remain behind bars Wednesday night out of concerns for his safety. Burgos is accused of abandoning the victims of the Sept. 30 accident and fleeing, charges that can carry six months to two years in prison . . . The Twins will keep backup catcher Mike Redmond for another season, paying him $950,000. The 37-year-old hit .287 in 38 games this season with 12 RBIs . . . Bruce Dal Canton, a high school teacher who turned a good showing at a tryout into a lengthy career as a major league pitcher and coach, died Tuesday of esophageal cancer in Carnegie, Pa. He was 66. The righthanded knuckleballer went 51-49 with a 3.67 ERA from 1967-77 with Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Atlanta, and the Chicago White Sox. (Obituary, C7.)

Green a star in Texas with opening 62
Nathan Green shot an 8-under-par 62 to take a two-stroke lead over Olin Browne and Paul Claxton in the PGA Tour's Texas Open in San Antonio . . . Michele Redman and Maria Hjorth shot 6-under 66s to share the first-round lead in the LPGA Tour's Longs Drugs Challenge in Danville, Calif. . . . Phil Blackmar, Bruce Fleisher, and Des Smyth shot 5-under 65s to share the first-round lead in the Senior Players Championship at Timonium, Md., the fifth and final Champions Tour major of the year . . . Paul Broadhurst had a 4-under 67 to tie Magnus Carlsson and Marcus Fraser for a one-shot lead after the first round of the European Tour's Madrid Masters . . . In MLS, Jamison Olave scored the tying goal off a corner kick late in the first half and Real Salt Lake opened Rio Tinto Stadium with a 1-1 tie against New York. Austrian skier Marlies Schild will miss the World Cup season after breaking her left leg in a training crash in Innsbruck, Austria . . . Southern Cal quarterback Mark Sanchez, who sustained a bone bruise in his left knee Saturday against Oregon, went through a full session of practice and appears on track to start against Arizona State tomorrow.
