Pacers pack Williams off to Mavericks

Pacers president Larry Bird, continuing his housecleaning of the team, traded forward Shawne Williams yesterday to the Mavericks for 14-year veteran Eddie Jones, future draft picks, and cash. Bird has made it clear he plans to repair the team's image after several negative off-the-court issues in recent years. Williams, Indiana's first-round draft pick in 2006, was dogged by three incidents involving police in the past 13 months. "This trade wasn't made because he wasn't talented enough, it was because of the other things," said Bird. The Pacers also announced that veteran center Jeff Foster signed a contract extension. Terms of the deal were not disclosed . . . Carmelo Anthony sat out the Nuggets' exhibition opener against Minnesota because of a bruised left ring finger . . . A Minneapolis radio station says it will air public service announcements on HIV/AIDS after a pair of talk hosts accused Magic Johnson of faking AIDS. KTLK's Chris Baker and Langdon Perry made the remarks during Baker's talk show Wednesday. Johnson condemned the statements.

Alfredsson will have knee surgery
Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson will undergo arthroscopic surgery today on his right knee and will be sidelined two weeks. He'll have a bone chip removed, the team said. His knee was injured during a game against the Penguins Sunday . . . The Canucks signed 22-year-old defenseman Alex Edler to a four-year contract extension. The deal will keep Edler under contract through 2012-13. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Stroud leads PGA Texas Open by 2
Chris Stroud fired a 6-under-par 64 to take a two-stroke lead after the second round of the PGA Tour's Texas Open in San Antonio. The 26-year-old Stroud, 209th on the money list, had a 10-under 130 total on the La Cantera Golf Club's Resort Course. Paul Goydos (66), Tim Petrovic (65), and Tim Herron (67) were at 132 . . . In-Kyung Kim shot a 3-under 69 for an 8-under 136 total to take a one-stroke lead over Mollie Fankhauser (68) in the LPGA Tour's Longs Drugs Challenge at Danville, Calif., while top-ranked Lorena Ochoa (68) was two shots behind . . . Ben Crenshaw shot a 4-under 66 to take a one-stroke lead over Fred Funk (68) at the midway point of the Senior Players Championship in Timonium, Md. Crenshaw, who hasn't won a tournament since capturing the Masters in 1995, is at 7-under 133 . . . Charl Schwartzel shot a 7-under 64 to share the lead by two strokes with Marcus Fraser (66) at 9-under 133 after the second round of the European Tour's Madrid Masters.

Canseco detained by border guards
Jose Canseco was held for nearly 10 hours by immigration authorities after agents stopped the onetime Red Sox slugger with a fertility drug as he returned from Mexico, his lawyer said. Canseco was ordered to appear in federal court in San Diego "related to an alleged smuggling violation" Thursday at a US border crossing. Canseco was detained at San Diego's San Ysidro crossing after agents searched his vehicle and said they found human chorionic gonadotropin, which is illegal without a prescription and is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency . . . Two members of Cuba's national soccer team have gone missing during its trip to Washington for tonight's World Cup qualifying match, the team's coach told reporters. "It is always a problem for the Cuba team," coach Reinhold Fanz told the Washington Post. "We have security, but you can't handcuff them to their rooms." The Post identified the players as midfielder Pedro Faife, 24, and forward Reynier Alcantara, 26 . . . Disgraced former Olympic track star Tim Montgomery, once dubbed "the world's fastest man," was sentenced by a Norfolk, Va., judge to five years in prison for dealing heroin to an informant. Montgomery, 33, will serve the five-year sentence after he completes a 46-month prison term for an unrelated conviction in New York . . . Helio Castroneves can leave the United States for an IndyCar event in Australia Oct. 26 after a federal judge in Miami agreed to modify bail conditions on tax charges the driver is facing . . . Stanley Ogrodnik, who amassed a 478-186 record over 27 seasons as men's basketball coach at Trinity College, announced his retirement.
