Kerrigan Pirates' new pitching coach

The Pirates tabbed former Red Sox manager and pitching coach Joe Kerrigan as pitching coach yesterday, replacing Jeff Andrews. Kerrigan was Boston's pitching coach from 1997-2001, during the time Pedro Martínez won two AL Cy Young Awards. Kerrigan was the Phillies pitching coach from 2003-04 and was the Yankees' bullpen coach in 2006-07 after serving as a Yankees special adviser for one season. Kerrigan, 53, finished the 2001 season as manager of the Red Sox after Jimy Williams was fired and had a 17-26 record. He was replaced by Grady Little the next season . . . The Athletics secured some stability in the middle of their infield, agreeing on an $11 million, two-year contract with second baseman Mark Ellis. The A's also have a club option in the deal that could keep Ellis around through 2011. The 31-year-old Ellis, who had right shoulder surgery last month to repair chips in the cartilage as well as a torn labrum, could have become a free agent after the World Series . . . General manager Jim Hendry and the Cubs agreed to a four-year contract extension through 2012. The Cubs are 537-513 since Hendry became GM July 5, 2002, and have had winning records in four of his six full seasons.Dec. 17 court date set for Chamberlain
Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain is to appear in court Dec. 17 in Lincoln, Neb., following his arrest on suspicion of drunken driving early Saturday. His blood-alcohol content level was 0.134 at the time of his arrest; the legal limit in Nebraska is 0.08. The 23-year-old pitcher was cited on suspicion of driving under the influence, speeding, and having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle. Lancaster County Chief Deputy Attorney Joe Kelly said his office has not decided on formal charges . . . The Orioles released lefthander Adam Loewen, who was 0-2 with an 8.02 ERA this season . . . The Dodgers have declined a $5.5 million club option on shortstop Angel Berroa, instead opting for a $500,000 buyout.NBA
Ankle sprain sidelines Utah's Williams
Jazz point guard Deron Williams will miss at least two weeks with a sprained left ankle. Williams rolled his ankle when he landed on Bulls rookie Derrick Rose's foot in an exhibition game Saturday. The Jazz said MRI results showed no damage to the bone and tendons around the ankle, but the second-degree sprain will keep him out of the lineup. Utah opens the season at home Oct. 29 against Denver . . . Baron Davis learned his injured finger does not need surgery, and the Clippers point guard might be ready to play in the season opener Oct. 29 against the Lakers. Davis has a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his left ring finger, but is expected to resume basketball activities in a week. The 29-year-old Davis, who signed a five-year, $65 million contract in July, injured the finger when he fell during practice Friday. Also, center Marcus Camby has been sidelined with a bruised right heel and isn't expected to play in the Clippers' final three exhibition games . . . Nets center Josh Boone, who experienced a rapid heartbeat at practice Friday, was held out of an exhibition game against the Knicks. The former University of Connecticut standout missed the game against the Celtics Sunday and had tests yesterday that were inconclusive. He is scheduled for further tests tomorrow . . . Wizards All-Star forward Antawn Jamison practiced without a protective sleeve on his banged-up right knee and expects to be at 100 percent for the start of the regular season Oct. 29 against the Nets . . . Sasha Vujacic went through his first practice with the Lakers since spraining his left ankle Sept. 30. "It feels good. There are certain movements, certain things I can't do," the 24-year-old guard said.

Marcus Vick pleads guilty to DUI
Former Virginia Tech quarterback Marcus Vick has pleaded guilty to drunken driving, eluding police, and driving on the wrong side of the road. The 24-year-old brother of former Falcons quarterback Michael Vick was arrested in Norfolk, Va., in June after fleeing an officer who saw him involved in a dispute with a woman. A Norfolk judge suspended a 12-month jail sentence on the DUI charge, but Vick must pay fines and lose his license for a year. Vick was dropped from the Virginia Tech team in 2006 after problems on and off the field. The Miami Dolphins released him a year later . . . Alabama nose guard Terrence Cody will miss at least two games with a sprained right medial collateral ligament . . . Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema said Dustin Sherer will start at quarterback for the Badgers against Illinois Saturday . . . In The Sports Network's football championship subdivision poll, New Hampshire (5-1) moved up one spot to No. 10, while Massachusetts (4-3) dropped from 10th to 17th. Finger surgery for Holik; out 3-4 weeks
Devils center Bobby Holik will be sidelined 3-4 weeks following surgery today on his broken right pinkie. He was injured Saturday night in Washington. The Devils recalled left wing Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond from Lowell (AHL) to take his roster spot . . . Northeastern's victory over Boston College Saturday vaulted the previously unranked Huskies to 14th in the USCHO/CBS men's college hockey poll. BC dropped from No. 1 to No. 3.
