Raiders' Walker to have ankle surgery

Raiders wide receiver Javon Walker is scheduled to undergo ankle surgery and likely will miss the remainder of the season. No official announcement was made and interim coach Tom Cable did not mention it during his meeting with the media, but Walker told reporters yesterday his season is over after injuring his left ankle during Oakland's 17-6 loss to Carolina last Sunday. Walker walked into the locker room using a pair of crutches and wearing a high protective boot on his left foot. "I'm done for the season," Walker said. "They've got to put some screws in." . . . Michael Vick's bankruptcy attorneys say the imprisoned NFL quarterback expects to return to football once he completes a 23-month sentence for a federal dogfighting conviction last summer. The attorneys filed the statement before a hearing in US Bankruptcy Court in Virginia.

Kings' Theus fined for comments
The NBA fined Sacramento Kings coach Reggie Theus $25,000 for comments he made about the officiating following a loss to Detroit. The league also penalized the Kings $25,000 for Theus's actions. Theus said it was "ridiculous" that the Pistons took 36 foul shots to just 17 for the Kings in Detroit's 100-92 victory in Sacramento Tuesday . . . The Portland Trail Blazers will retire the No. 30 twice in December, honoring Terry Porter and Bobby Gross. Only two other NBA numbers have been retired on behalf of two players, according to the Blazers. New York retired No. 15 in honor of Dick McGuire and Earl Monroe, while Boston retired No. 18, worn by Dave Cowens and Jim Loscutoff.

Savard rejoins Chicago as ambassador
Former coach Denis Savard is back with the Chicago Blackhawks. The Hall of Famer returned to the organization as a team ambassador after being fired as coach last month. He joins former Blackhawks Tony Esposito, Bobby Hull, and Stan Mikita in the community relations role. The Blackhawks were 1-2-1 when the organization replaced Savard with Joel Quenneville . . . The Washington Capitals signed 2008 first-round draft pick John Carlson to a three-year, entry-level contract.

Crew douse Fire to head to MLS Cup
Chad Marshall and Eddie Gaven led host Columbus to its first MLS Cup appearance, scoring second-half goals in the Crew's 2-1 victory over the Chicago Fire in the Eastern Conference final. Columbus will face the winner of tomorrow's Western Conference final, New York at Real Salt Lake, Nov. 23 . . . Los Angeles Galaxy defender Sean Franklin was selected MLS Rookie of the Year. Franklin started 26 games for the Galaxy and played 2,385 minutes, second most on the club . . . D.C. United goalkeeper Zach Wells had foot surgery and is expected to be sidelined about three months. . . Diego Maradona will remain Argentina coach after denying rumors he planned to resign over a dispute with his boss.

Ochoa shoots 73 in hometown tourney
Lorena Ochoa struggled in the first round in her Lorena Ochoa Invitational, shooting a 1-over-par 73 on her home course in Guadalajara, Mexico, to drop five strokes behind Annika Sorenstam and the other leaders. LPGA Championship winner Yani Tseng, No. 2 in the world behind Ochoa, topped the leaderboard at 68 along with Sorenstam, Angela Stanford, Karen Stupples, Seon Hwa Lee, Nicole Castrale, Hee-Won Han, and Brittany Lang . . . Ernie Els birdied two of his final four holes in the first round for a 5-under 66 and a one-stroke lead in the Asian Tour's Singapore Open . . . Sakio Bika captured the vacant International Boxing Organization super middleweight title in Providence, stopping Peter Manfredo Jr. in the third round of a scheduled 12-rounder . . . Racecar driver Helio Castroneves's attorneys and employer asked a Miami judge to delay his March trial on tax evasion charges until next November so he can continue racing . . . Suffolk Downs ended its 2008 season with 7 percent declines in live wagering and attendance but an 11 percent increase in handles because of a 13 percent growth in simulcast wagering, said chief operating officer Chip Tuttle.
