Annika Sorenstam arrived at the first tee yesterday, shook a few hands, and got a kiss on the cheek from Donald Trump. Then she turned to the gallery and waved. Today, unless she moves a bit up the leaderboard, she'll be waving goodbye. Sorenstam shot a 2-over-par 74 in the opening round of the ADT Championship in West Palm Beach, Fla., good for a tie for 23d in the 32-woman event, her final LPGA Tour appearance before "stepping away" from competitive golf. The field gets trimmed to 16 after today's play, meaning Sorenstam has some work remaining just to reach the weekend. Otherwise, her LPGA Tour career will come to an unceremonious end. Sorenstam is a four-time ADT winner and a giant fan of the Trump International course, but in this double-cut, erase-the-scores format, she's never even reached the weekend. The scores are erased after today's play, then get wiped clear again after tomorrow's round, after which only the top eight get invited back Sunday to play for the $1 million winner's prize. Sorenstam put together consecutive birdies on the par-4 14th and par-5 15th and finished six shots behind Katherine Hull (68). World No. 1 Lorena Ochoa was tied for 26th after a 75. Cristie Kerr was tied for last after shooting 78, and Inbee Park withdrew after starting a whopping 13 over through 14 holes . . . John Daly put himself within four strokes of leaders Liang Wenchong and Richard Sterne, who both shot a 6-under 64 in the first round of the $2.5 million Hong Kong Open. Daly was 4 under after 15 holes, but bogeys on the last two holes cost him a share of fifth. Michael Campbell dropped out after the first round with a right shoulder injury . . . Paul Sheehan shot a 4-under 67 to take a one-stroke lead over seven golfers after the first round at the Dunlop Phoenix in Miyazaki, Japan.Soccer
Donovan in Bayern Munich's plans
Juergen Klinsmann appears to be a big fan of Landon Donovan. Bayern Munich is set to sign the US national team's all-time leading scorer on a loan deal running from Jan. 1 that is similar to the one Donovan's Los Angeles Galaxy teammate David Beckham has reached with AC Milan, but the Bundesliga juggernaut might want Donovan's stay to last longer. "The goal will be to see if we can get him long term, at least until the end of the season," Bayern coach Klinsmann told the club's website. The Bundesliga season ends in late May, two months into the MLS season. Despite their star power (Donovan led the league with 20 goals), the Galaxy failed to make the playoffs this year. Beckham is expected to rejoin LA before the start of the MLS season. But Donovan's stint could be a trial that leads to a transfer if he can earn playing time competing with star strikers Luca Toni, Miroslav Klose, and Lukas Podolski. This will be Donovan's third attempt to break through in the Bundesliga after two unsuccessful stints with Bayer Leverkusen . . . The Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld a ruling that Atletico Madrid must play its Champions League match Wednesday against PSV Eindhoven in an empty stadium because of racist behavior by its fans during a match against Marseille Oct. 1.NHL
Knee injuries sideline Fisher, Neil
The Ottawa Senators will be without center Mike Fisher (strained knee ligament) for a week and winger Chris Neil (meniscus tear) for at least a month . . . Dallas Stars winger Jere Lehtinen, who missed the first 14 games of the season because of a groin injury, will be out a week and a half with an upper-body injury . . . Two significant defensemen out with season-ending knee injuries underwent anterior cruciate ligament surgery. The St. Louis Blues' Erik Johnson had surgery on his right knee. The Anaheim Ducks' Francois Beauchemin had surgery on his left knee.Auto racing
Kenseth staying with Roush Fenway
Matt Kenseth, the 2003 NASCAR champion who finished 11th in the Sprint Cup standings this season, signed a contract extension with Roush Fenway Racing. Terms of the multiyear agreement weren't released. The 36-year-old Wisconsin native has been with Roush since 1998 and has 16 wins in the top division. The extension completes Roush Fenway's renewals for the season. Carl Edwards, who won the most races this year and finished second in the standings, extended his contract in May, and Greg Biffle did the same in June. Both deals were for three years. Jamie McMurray and David Ragan will also continue to drive for Roush in 2009.Miscellany
No shock: Detroit brings back Laimbeer
The WNBA champion Detroit Shock re-signed coach Bill Laimbeer to a two-year contract. A two-time NBA champion as a member of the Detroit Pistons, Laimbeer guided the Shock to their third title during his seven years as coach . . . Argentina's David Nalbandian will face Spain's David Ferrer today in the opening match of the Davis Cup final in Mar Del Plata, Argentina. Juan Martin del Potro, Argentina's top-ranked player at No. 9, was drawn to play Feliciano Lopez in the second singles match of the best-of-five series . . . Seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong will race against longtime teammate George Hincapie in the Tour Down Under in Australia in January, according to race organizers.© Copyright 2008 Globe Newspaper Company.
