Ramírez apologizes to teammates

An "anxious" Manny Ramírez apologized to his Los Angeles Dodgers teammates yesterday in Miami, the first time he was around the club since being suspended 50 games for using a banned substance. Ramírez used the words "I'm sorry," said manager Joe Torre, although many players said the apology wasn't necessary. "We spent some time together before we went into the meeting room and he was a little anxious," Torre said. "He basically went around, shook everybody's hand." The brief meeting took place at the team's waterfront hotel before the Dodgers arrived at the Marlins' stadium to start a three-game series.

Phillies a big hit at the White House
President Obama turned Phillie Phanatic for a day, hosting the 2008 World Series champions at the White House. Shortstop Jimmy Rollins, who campaigned for Obama last year, presented the president with a Phillies jersey and baseball. Obama called the Phillies "an underdog team that loved to prove the prognosticators wrong," and then added, "so we share something in common there." . . . Major League Baseball suspended White Sox outfielder Jermaine Dye two games for throwing his helmet Wednesday, which bounced off an umpire. Dye appealed the suspension.

Report: Favre consulted with surgeon
Citing an anonymous source, ESPN.com reported that Brett Favre consulted famed orthopedic surgeon James Andrews about options for healing the partially torn biceps tendon that has caused pain in his right shoulder. According to the report, Andrews and Favre experimented with an exercise regimen that could allow the tendon to heal naturally and thus avoid an operation . . . Former NFL star Bruce Smith was charged with drunken driving in Virginia Beach after the 45-year-old Hall of Famer was stopped for speeding early yesterday morning. Smith was released on bond a few hours after being charged with speeding, driving under the influence, and refusal to take an alcohol breath test.

Former OU star, NBA player Tisdale dies
Wayman Tisdale, 44, a three-time All-American at Oklahoma who played 12 seasons in the NBA and later became a top jazz musician, died in Tulsa, Okla., after a two-year battle with cancer. Tisdale, who remains the Sooners' career leader in scoring and rebounding, was chosen for induction into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame last month. Obituary, B9 . . . Phelps wins twice in return to pool
Michael Phelps still remembers how to win. The most decorated Olympian ever took two events at the Charlotte UltraSwim in North Carolina in his first meet since Beijing, showing he's moved on from the embarrassment of being photographed using a marijuana pipe and serving a three-month suspension. Phelps touched first in the 200-meter freestyle in 1 minute 46.02 seconds. He came back less than an hour later to win the 100-meter butterfly in 51.72. Both were meet records. "I was real happy with today," Phelps said. "I think the training is working well." . . . Roger Federer's dominance of Andy Roddick carried over to their first meeting on clay, defeating the American, 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, to reach the Madrid Open semifinals. Federer is 18-2 against Roddick. Rafael Nadal won his 32d straight match on clay, beating Fernando Verdasco, 6-4, 7-5. Defending champion Andy Murray lost to Juan Martin del Potro, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, and Novak Djokovic dispatched Ivan Ljubicic, 6-4, 6-4.
