Milwaukee Brewers second baseman Rickie Weeks will miss the rest of the season because of a tear in his left wrist, the team announced yesterday. Weeks, who had a similar injury to his right wrist in 2006, hurt himself while striking out Sunday in St. Louis. He underwent an MRI yesterday that revealed a torn sheath in his wrist. The Brewers had won 11 of 13, with Weeks (.272, 9 home runs, 24 RBIs) as a catalyst. The Brewers said Weeks will likely have surgery this week, with a recovery time of 4-6 months. Veteran Craig Counsell and rookie Casey McGehee are expected to share second base duties . . . Mets slugger Carlos Delgado will have surgery today on his right hip, and there's no immediate word on when he might return to the lineup. The NL East leaders said Delgado has a bone spur and a torn labrum in his hip, the same injury that sidelined Yankees star Alex Rodriguez for two months. The Mets also placed reserve infielder Alex Cora on the 15-day disabled list with a torn ligament in his right thumb . . . Rangers closer Frank Francisco threw a bullpen session and is scheduled to throw a simulated game tomorrow in Detroit. Francisco, who hasn't appeared in a game since May 6, went on the disabled list Saturday with right biceps tendinitis . . . The Cardinals hope center fielder Rick Ankiel (shoulder) and pitcher Chris Carpenter (rib) both can rejoin the team tomorrow . . . Citing dizziness, Reds first baseman Joey Votto skipped the team's flight home from California to seek medical testing in San Diego. Votto has missed five games with the flu . . . Braves lefthander Tom Glavine (shoulder) threw three simulated innings, another step in the 300-game winner's plans for a rehab assignment this week.Fox moves up Series, ALCS start times
Following record-low ratings for last year's World Series, Major League Baseball and Fox are moving up the start times this year. Weeknight games in the World Series and AL Championship Series will begin at 7:57 p.m. EDT, more than a half-hour before last year's first-pitch times, Fox said. The start of Saturday night games could be even earlier, and Sunday games will continue to begin following the conclusion of the network's NFL coverage. No announcement was made about the NL Championship Series or the division series, which are televised by TBS . . . Ready to return from the disabled list, Yankees reliever Brian Bruney blamed an 8 1/2-minute wait during an umpires' video review for causing a strained flexor muscle in his right elbow. Bruney went on the disabled list April 25, six days after he was warming up in the bullpen during the seventh inning when umpires checked video before upholding a home run by teammate Jorge Posada. Bruney then entered in the eighth and got three outs. Bruney pitched just once after the April 19 game, throwing an inning April 21 before going on the DL.Horse racing
Mine That Bird loses jockey again
Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird is in need of yet another jockey. Mike Smith, who rode the gelding to a second-place finish in Saturday's Preakness Stakes, won't ride him in the Belmont Stakes June 6 because of a previous commitment. Smith is already set to ride Madeo in the $300,000 Charles Whittingham Memorial Handicap at Hollywood Park that day. That means Calvin Borel, who rode Mine That Bird to a stunning victory in the Derby, could get back on him for the Belmont if Rachel Alexandra doesn't run. Borel opted to ride Rachel Alexandra in the Preakness, and she became the first filly in 85 years to win the second leg of the Triple Crown. Co-owner Jess Jackson has not yet decided if she will run in the 1 1/2-mile Belmont.Tennis
Sharapova rusty, but returns with win
Maria Sharapova played her first singles match on tour in nearly 10 months, and while she won, her game did show signs of rust after returning from surgery for a torn rotator cuff last year. The three-time Grand Slam title winner needed nine match points to finally put away 68th-ranked Tathiana Garbin, 6-1, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, in the first round of the Warsaw Open.Miscellany
Roy denies he got offer from Avalanche
Hall of Fame goaltender Patrick Roy denied being offered the Colorado Avalanche's coaching job, a position currently held by Tony Granato. The Denver Post reported that Roy had received an offer and was mulling it over. The Avalanche declined comment on the report, which cited anonymous league sources. Roy is co-owner, coach, and general manager of the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League . . . Justin Peters shot a 2-under-par 72 to lead a group of four golfers who advanced in US Open sectional qualifying at Crumpin-Fox Golf Club in Bernardston. Trevor Murphy (72), Fran Quinn of Holden (73), and Michael Welch of Quincy (73) also advanced . . . Prosecutors have dropped criminal charges against Connecticut linebacker Scott Lutrus, who was arrested last month after a fight at an apartment complex during the start of the school's Spring Weekend festivities.© Copyright 2009 Globe Newspaper Company.
