Braves general manager Frank Wren said he had no comment yesterday on a report by FoxSports.com that Tom Glavine may file a grievance against the team following his release Wednesday. Glavine said Friday he believes he was released for financial reasons. Wren, team chairman Terry McGuirk, and president John Schuerholz said Glavine was released because they did not believe the 43-year-old lefthander would make a successful return from surgery on his elbow and shoulder. Glavine would have received a $1 million bonus if he had been activated from the disabled list by yesterday, as he expected . . . Pirates general manager Neal Huntington wrote an open letter to fans on the team's website explaining the decision to trade center fielder Nate McLouth to Atlanta wasn't financially motivated. "We have said several times that tough decisions will need to be made as we build and sustain a championship caliber organization," Huntington wrote. The Pirates have the majors' lowest average attendance, prompting speculation that the trade of McLouth, who signed a contract extension during the offseason, was made to save money.PawSox squander Bowden's effort
The Pawtucket Red Sox wasted six splendid innings by Michael Bowden, blowing a three-run lead in the ninth to fall to the Durham Bulls, 5-4, at McCoy Stadium. Bowden held Durham to one run on six hits and a walk, but the Pawtucket bullpen couldn't hold a 3-1 advantage. Hunter Jones was charged with all four runs in the ninth, although the key play came against Marcus McBeth, who entered with the bases loaded with one out and two runs in. McBeth's first batter, Ray Sadler, reached on an error by third baseman Travis Denker, allowing the tying run to score. Chris Richard followed with a run-scoring ground out. Pawtucket stranded two runners in the bottom of the ninth . . . The Sea Dogs rolled to a 10-3 home win over the Trenton Thunder thanks to an eight-run seventh inning, during which the first eight Portland batters reached base. By then Junichi Tazawa (7-3, 2.67 ERA) already had wrapped up his day, giving up one run and striking out six over six innings.Colleges
