Tigers give Leyland two-year extension

The Detroit Tigers extended manager Jim Leyland’s contract yesterday by two years through the 2011 season. Leyland, 64, is in his fourth season with the team, and this was the last year on his deal. “It’s extremely well deserved,’’ said Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski . . . Manny Ramirez is expected to join the Dodgers’ Triple A team in Albuquerque for a four-game series starting Tuesday, the Los Angeles Times reported . . . The two-game suspension of Brewers center fielder Mike Cameron for bumping an umpire was cut in half by Major League Baseball . . . Connor Rowe hit a solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, moments after Cameron Rupp tied it with a homer, as Texas came from behind to beat Arizona State, 4-3, in the College World Series in Omaha. Bryant staying, Jackson still unsure
Kobe Bryant said he plans to stay with the Lakers and won’t opt out of his contract this summer. The NBA Finals MVP can terminate the last two years of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent July 1. Phil Jackson, 63, said he’d like to coach another year, but “medical issues’’ will have to be addressed before he can commit to another season . . . Ex-QB Leaf surrenders to authorities
Former Chargers quarterback Ryan Leaf surrendered to Texas authorities to face burglary and drug-related charges. Leaf posted $15,000 bail and headed back to Washington state, where he was arrested Wednesday and posted bond . . . Former Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar has filed for bankruptcy protection in Miami. Kosar’s Chapter 11 filing lists assets between $1 million and $10 million and liabilities of between $10 million and $50 million.NHL
Blues re-sign Tkachuk for one year
The Blues signed forward Keith Tkachuk, 37, for another season. Tkachuk, who is from Medford, had 25 goals and 24 assists last season . . . The Coyotes re-signed left wing Petr Prucha to a two-year contract . . . World heavyweight champion Vladimir Klitschko will fight Ruslan Chagaev as planned tonight in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, as the challenger’s hepatitis B virus poses no health threat, health officials said . . .
