Yankees’ Nady may be done for season
BASEBALL
Yankees outfielder Xavier Nady reinjured his elbow and appears headed for season-ending surgery. Nady felt pain when making a throw during a rehab assignment at Triple A Scranton Thursday night. The outfielder, acquired from Pittsburgh last July, has been sidelined since hurting the elbow April 14 at Tampa Bay. He is scheduled to be re-examined Tuesday by Los Angeles Angels medical director Dr. Lewis Yocum, who replaced Nady’s elbow ligament in September 2001. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Nady might need the ligament replaced again . . . Major League Baseball told an umpiring crew it mistakenly went to a video review Thursday night on a ball hit by Tampa Bay’s Pat Burrell that bounced into the stands. Crew chief Gary Cederstrom was not disciplined. Replay is to be used only on potential home runs involving boundary calls - was the ball fair or foul, did it clear the wall, or was there fan interference.
Royals’ Ponson tested positive at WBC
Royals pitcher Sidney Ponson tested positive for a stimulant during the World Baseball Classic and is banned from international competition for two years. MLB will not suspend Ponson. Under the drug rules, he will be treated as a first-time offender and is subject to a medical review and fine . . . Meanwhile, Cubs manager Lou Piniella defended catcher Geovany Soto, who tested positive for marijuana during the WBC, by admitting he once smoked pot . . . The Mariners activated catcher Kenji Johjima from the disabled list after he missed 26 games with a broken toe.

Magic’s Turkoglu opts for free agency
A day after the Magic acquired Vince Carter from the Nets, Hedo Turkoglu’s agent said he sent a notice to Orlando this week that his client will opt out of his contract to become a free agent . . . The Jazz made a qualifying offer to forward Paul Millsap, giving the team the right to match any offers he receives as a restricted free agent . . . Coach Don Nelson says the Warriors won’t trade guard Stephen Curry, the seventh overall pick . . . Alonzo Mourning is returning to the Miami Heat as vice president of player development.

Goodell reviewing Burress shooting
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has started a review of the Plaxico Burress shooting under the league’s personal conduct policy. The league confirmed Goodell was examining the incident in which Burress shot himself in the thigh in November in a New York City nightclub. The commissioner could suspend him. . . . Former Browns receiver Joe Jurevicius sued the team and the Cleveland Clinic, saying the team misrepresented the cleanliness of its training facility and blamed doctors with negligence over a staph infection in his right knee that kept him from playing last year . . . The Jets claimed wide receiver Mario Urrutia off waivers from the Bengals. Urrutia was a seventh-round draft pick by the Bengals last year and spent the season on the practice squad.

Revolution place Twellman on DL
The Revolution put forward Taylor Twellman on the disabled list because of symptoms of a concussion. Twellman will miss at least six games . . . The Seattle Sounders signed former New York Red Bulls goalkeeper Terry Boss.

Mayweather cleared to fight
Floyd Mayweather, who was scheduled to fight Juan Manuel Marquez next month, said he’s been cleared by doctors and the fight is rescheduled for Sept. 19. Mayweather damaged cartilage in his ribs while training two weeks ago . . . Golfer John Daly was ordered to pay almost $272,000 in legal fees for his unsuccessful libel lawsuit against The Florida Times-Union. A Duval County (Florida) Circuit Judge ruled that former columnist Mike Freeman’s statements in a 2005 column were either true or constitutionally protected opinion. . . . Katie Douglas scored all of her 28 points after halftime and Ebony Hoffman hit two free throws with 4.8 seconds left in overtime to lift the Indiana Fever to an 82-81 victory over the host New York Liberty in WNBA action . . . Chamique Holdsclaw scored 28 points and Ericka DeSouza had a double-double to help the host Atlanta Dream beat the Detroit Shock, 96-86 . . .
