BASEBALL
Is Eric Hinske a World Series talisman? Perhaps that’s what the New York Yankees were thinking yesterday when they acquired the utilityman from the Pittsburgh Pirates for minor league righthander Casey Erickson and outfielder Eric Fryer. Hinske, 31, made it to the Fall Classic the past two seasons as a backup with the Red Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays. The 2002 AL Rookie of the Year hit 24 home runs for the Toronto Blue Jays that season and had 20 for the Rays last year. “He’s been through the trenches in the AL East,’’ Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. “He knows his role.’’ Hinske was batting .255 with one home run for Pittsburgh, which also dealt left fielder Nyjer Morgan and lefthander Sean Burnett to the Washington Nationals for outfielder Lastings Milledge and reliever Joel Hanrahan. Morgan, the fourth starting outfielder traded by the Pirates in less than a year, is hitting .277 with two homers and 27 RBIs, while Milledge, once considered a rising star with the New York Mets, is rehabilitating from May surgery to repair a broken ring finger. Pittsburgh swapped Xavier Nady to the Yankees and Jason Bay to the Red Sox last July and sent Nate McLouth to the Braves last month.

All-Star center fielder Josh Hamilton, who had surgery three weeks ago to repair a slight abdominal tear, expects to be back in the Texas Rangers lineup this weekend after a short rehab stint with Double A Frisco (Texas) . . . Also ready to return is Los Angeles Angels righthander Ervin Santana, sidelined since June 12 by an inflamed right triceps . . . A second examination confirmed Mets center fielder Carlos Beltran will not need surgery on his ailing right knee . . .
