Lemaire returns home to Devils’ bench

Jacques Lemaire, who led New Jersey to its first Stanley Cup in 1995, has returned as head coach, the NHL team said yesterday. Lemaire, 63, has coached Minnesota the past nine seasons. He replaces Brent Sutter, who resigned after two seasons and is now the head coach of the Flames. Lemaire coached the Devils from 1993-98. His 378 games, 199 wins, 56 postseason games and 34 postseason victories are tops for the franchise. The Devils also announced Mario Tremblay, an assistant under Lemaire in Minnesota, will have the same role with the Devils . . . Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli announced the team has signed four players to one-year contracts. On board are a pair of defensemen - Rob Kwiet and Zach McKelvie - and a pair of centers - Drew Larman and Trent Whitfield. Kwiet, 20, spent last season with the Windsor Spitfires, who won the 2009 Memorial Cup. McKelvie, 24, played the last four seasons at Army and is a two-time Atlantic Hockey Association First-Team All-Star. Larman, 24, played the last four seasons with the Rochester Americans in the AHL. Whitfield, 32, spent most of last year playing for Peoria (AHL) . . . The Rangers agreed to a multiyear pact with forward Ryan Callahan, who set career highs with 22 goals, 40 points, and 81 games last season.NBA
Nuggets deal for Afflalo and Sharpe
Denver acquired Arron Afflalo and Walter Sharpe from Detroit in exchange for a second-round draft pick. The Nuggets also received cash. The Pistons freed up close to $1.8 million in salary cap space. Afflalo, a former UCLA star, averaged 4.9 points in 74 games last season. Sharpe played in eight games with the Pistons last season. The 6-foot-9-inch forward was taken by the Sonics in the second round of the 2008 draft before being dealt to Detroit later that night . . . Anthony Parker, 34, signed a two-year deal with the Cavaliers, worth about $6 million. He averaged 10.7 points and 3.4 assists in 80 games for the Raptors last season . . . Free agent guard Jannero Pargo, who played in Russia and Greece last year, signed a one-year deal with the Bulls . . . The Magic have retained backup center Marcin Gortat, matching the $34 million, five-year deal offered by the Mavericks.Iverson on Clippers radar sceen?
Los Angeles Times is reporting talks between the Clippers and free agent guard Allen Iverson, 34, are “very serious,’’ according to a source close to Iverson who was not authorized to speak publicly about the negotiations. Iverson is looking at the $5.8 million mid-level exception for next season, and one of his other potential suitors, the Heat, reportedly are unwilling to offer more than $2 million for one season . . . As expected, the Hawks re-signed unrestricted free agents Mike Bibby and Zaza Pachulia. Bibby resolved a problem at point guard when he was acquired during the 2007-08 season. Pachulia has been a starter or top backup at center for four seasons . . . Rockets assistant Elston Turner interviewed in Las Vegas to become the next coach of the Timberwolves, according to KRIV-TV in Houston.NFL
Jets cut Franks; Mason set to retire
The Jets released veteran tight end Bubba Franks, who caught six passes for 47 yards in eight games, including four starts last season. He missed eight games because of a hip injury, and was unable to participate in offseason practices and minicamp because of a knee injury . . . Ravens wide receiver Derrick Mason told jocklife.com that he’s retiring. “After 12 years, I have seen it all and done it all,’’ Mason said. Mason has yet to inform the team of his decision . . . Third-round draft pick Roy Miller, a defensive tackle, has agreed to a four-year contract with the Buccaneers. To make room on the roster, backup quarterback Brian Griese, 34, was released.Soccer
Revolution’s Joseph is MLS All-Star
Revolution midfielder Shalrie Joseph was selected to the MLS All-Star Game for the sixth time. Joseph has been asked to reinvent himself this season, taking on a more offensive role because of the team’s injuries. Joseph missed his first MLS regular-season match July 4 because of a bone bruise in his knee and has not played since. Still, he leads the team in goals (five) and is tied with Steve Ralston for tops with four assists. The All-Star game will be July 29 at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah. Houston Dynamo coach Dominic Kinnear will lead the all-stars against Everton FC of the English Premier League.Monique Walker

Tour riders on their own for Stage 10
Organizers have banned all means of electronic communication between riders and their sports directors for the Tour de France’s 10th stage, a 120.9-mile ride from Limoges to Issoudun today. Organizers say banning the radios for two stages could inject drama into the race, forcing riders to devise tactics on their own instead of relying on advice from their team cars. Many riders, including Lance Armstrong and Alberto Contador, have criticized the measure as dangerous . . . Triple world champion Tyson Gay will run the 200 meters during the London Grand Prix July 24-25 as part of his preparations for the world championships in Berlin Aug. 15-23 . . . Nick Taylor of Canada, the low amateur at last month’s US Open, had the low score on the first day of qualifying at the US Amateur Public Links at Norman, Okla. Taylor, 21, shot a 5-under-par 66 to take a one-shot lead over Nick Geyer . . .
