Jordan Zimmermann will have reconstructive elbow surgery next week, leaving the Nationals without their top pitching prospect for at least a year. Manager Jim Riggleman said the normal recovery period is 12 to 18 months, which could keep the 23-year-old Zimmermann out until 2011. The surgery will be performed on his right elbow by Tommy John expert Dr. Lewis Yocum Wednesday in California ... Mariners lefthander Erik Bedard will have another surgery on his throwing shoulder, all but ending his season and maybe his time with Seattle. Manager Don Wakamatsu said Bedard, 30, will have exploratory surgery tomorrow in Los Angeles with Yocum, who removed a cyst from Bedard’s shoulder in September. Bedard could become a free agent this winter ... Twins lefthander Glen Perkins will have a second MRI on his left shoulder after Tuesday’s MRI came back inconclusive ... The Royals granted righthander Sidney Ponson unconditional release waivers, making the veteran a free agent ... The Charlotte Knights rallied to defeat the Pawtucket Red Sox, 6-2, in Fort Mill, S.C.

Sober Fleury seeks NHL comeback

Now that he is sober, 41-year-old Theo Fleury wants to resume his NHL career after a six-year absence. Fleury is preparing for training camp next month, but he doesn’t know if any of the 30 teams will invite him for a tryout. He left the Blackhawks after the 2002-03 season under indefinite suspension for violating the NHL’s substance abuse policy. Fleury has been sober for four years ... The clash with a cabbie Sunday that landed Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane behind bars in Buffalo is going before a grand jury. Buffalo police charged Kane and a 21-year-old cousin with felony robbery and misdemeanor counts of theft and criminal mischief after cab driver Jan Radecki said the Kanes beat him up during a dispute over the fare ... The Red Sox, Fenway Sports Group, and Hockey East will hold a joint press conference at Fenway Park next Thursday at 11 a.m., with school administrators, coaches and athletes from Boston College, Boston University, Northeastern, and University of New Hampshire ... Dorchester’s Kevin Hayes scored twice and Weymouth’s Charlie Coyle had the winning goal as the US Under-18 Select Team defeated Finland, 3-2, in the 2009 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka Tournament in Piestany, Slovakia.

Ferrero upsets Monfils in Montreal

Former world No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero advanced to the third round of the Rogers Cup in Montreal with a 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) upset of 13th-seeded Gael Monfils. Ferrero will face third-seeded Andy Murray in the next round. Andy Roddick beat Igor Andreev, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3). No. 15 Tommy Robredo was beaten, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-4), by Philipp Petzschner. Juan Martin Del Potro, the No. 6 seed, advanced with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Jan Hernych. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat Rainer Schuettler, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, to reach the third round. Rafael Nadal won his first match since May when David Ferrer retired with an apparent knee injury in the first set of their match with Nadal leading, 4-3 ... Former world No. 1 Kim Clijsters was one of three players awarded wild cards into Monday’s main draw of the Rogers Cup women’s tournament. Clijsters, the 2005 Rogers Cup champion, returned to action this week in Cincinnati, advancing to the third round with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Patty Schnyder. Stephanie Dubois and Valerie Tetreault were also awarded wild cards.

Pavlik to meet Williams for two titles
Middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik has agreed to defend his two title belts against Paul Williams. They will fight Oct. 3 at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall, Williams’s promoter, Dan Goossen said. The bout is a risk for Pavlik (35-1, 31 KOs), who rebounded from his one-sided loss to Bernard Hopkins last year by stopping Marco Antonio Rubio in February for the second defense of his World Boxing Council and World Boxing Organization 160-pound titles. Williams (37-1, 27 KOs) claims he has no trouble moving between 147 and 168 pounds ... US Marshals in Atlanta arrested Charman Sinkfield, the third man charged in the robbery and shooting death of former boxing champion Vernon Forrest.

Horton takes early lead in nationals

Jonathan Horton, the Olympic silver medalist on high bar, overcame an early fall from the pommel horse with a typically solid high bar routine in Dallas to take the lead after the first day at US gymnastics championships. Horton’s 15.9 points beat defending champion David Sender ... Jeremy Tyler, the 18-year-old basketball phenom who is skipping his senior year at San Diego High, has signed a one-year contract with Maccabi Haifa of the Israeli Premier League ... Free agent guard Von Wafer has signed a two-year, $10 million deal to play for Olympiakos, the same Greek team that landed Linus Kleiza from the Nuggets earlier this week ... The USA Field Hockey women’s junior World Cup team will play China Saturday in the 7/8 classification game of the BDO Women’s Junior World Cup Tournament at Harvard’s Jordan Field. The Netherlands will play Korea tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. and England will play Argentina at 4 p.m. in the semifinals. The final will be Sunday.
