Federer, Nadal upset in Rogers Cup

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga pulled out a stunning victory over World No. 1 Roger Federer and Juan Martin Del Potro followed with a two-set win over No. 2 Rafael Nadal last night to advance to the semifinals of the Rogers Cup in Montreal. Nadal was coming back from 10 weeks off to treat tendinitis in both knees, and Federer was out while his wife gave birth to twins. Down 5-1 in the third set, Tsonga used two service breaks to take the lead and then beat Federer in the tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, 7-6 (7-3). After a first set decided in a tiebreaker, Del Potro broke Nadal’s service twice for a 3-0 lead in the second for a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 win. Tsonga will face third-seeded Andy Murray, who defeated Nikolay Davydenko, 6-2, 6-4. Del Potro will meet fifth-seeded Andy Roddick, who beat fourth-seeded Novak Djokovic, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) . . . World No. 1 Dinara Safina ended Kim Clijsters’s brilliant comeback run at the Cincinnati Open in Mason, Ohio, 6-2, 7-5. Clijsters, a former No. 1, was back after a two-year break in which she got married and had a child.

Lincoln, R.I., to play Peabody in final
Tyler Duquette pitched a complete game and drove in five runs as Lincoln, R.I., beat Brattleboro, Vt., 14-3, in the New England Little League regional semifinals in Bristol, Conn. Lincoln will face Peabody Western at 2 p.m. today in the final, with the winner representing New England at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa. . . . Mariners lefthander Erik Bedard’s season is over. Bedard had arthroscopic surgery Thursday on his pitching shoulder to repair a torn labrum and clean other fraying in the joint. The Mariners announced Bedard would be able to throw again in 4-6 months. The 30-year-old’s future in Seattle is in doubt. His contract ends this season . . . The Diamondbacks signed first-round draft pick Bobby Borchering to a minor league contract that includes a $1.8 million signing bonus.

Phelps cited for invalid license
Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps was driving with an invalid, Michigan license and told police he drank a beer about an hour and 15 minutes before he was involved in an accident, Baltimore police said. The accident Thursday night was not Phelps’s fault, police said. But Phelps will be cited for driving without a license and failure to establish residency in Maryland, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said.

Jones can’t lead Sun to victory
In WNBA action, Asjha Jones scored 23 points, but the Connecticut Sun lost to the host Washington Mystics, 91-89, in double overtime . . . Sylvia Fowles had 22 points as the visiting Chicago Sky beat the Liberty in New York, 88-77 . . . Los Angeles’s Lisa Leslie led all scorers with 25 points, but the Sparks still lost to the visiting Sacramento Monarchs, 85-79 . . . The Denver Nuggets have re-signed backup point guard Anthony Carter . . . Former NBA player Grant Gondrezick, 45, pleaded guilty in a mortgage fraud case that involved the sale of 24 homes in Houston suburbs. He faces up to five years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and more $1 million in restitution for conspiring to commit wire fraud.

US Soccer advises flu treatments
All players, coaches, and support staff on the US national soccer team were advised to take a 10-day course of medication to combat possible exposure to the H1N1 “swine flu’’ virus after forward Landon Donovan was found Thursday to have contracted the virus. Based on the close exposure to Donovan during the team’s training camp in Miami and match against Mexico, US Soccer’s medical staff has recommended the treatment as a preventative measure . . . Brian Vickers turned a lap of 187.242 miles per hour, winning the pole position for tomorrow’s Sprint Cup race at Michigan International Speedway . . . Three-time Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Bob Baffert was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., along with trainer Janet Eliot, jockey Eddie Maple, and three horses - filly Silverbulletday, 2000 Horse of the Year Tiznow, and steeplechase champion Ben Nevis II . . . The Netherlands will face Argentina in the gold-medal game of the Junior World Cup field hockey tournament tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. at Harvard University’s Jordan Field. Argentina beat England, 1-0, and the Netherlands topped Korea, 5-0, in the semifinals . . .
