Red Sox short-timer John Smoltz, 42, agreed to a deal with the St. Louis Cardinals yesterday. General manager John Mozeliak said Smoltz, who went 2-5 with an 8.33 ERA for the Sox, would likely start Sunday at San Diego, and would probably get at least a few turns in the rotation . . . Righthander Vicente Padilla, who was released by Texas after alienating teammates there, came to terms with the Dodgers and will pitch Saturday at Triple A before making his first start for Los Angeles next Thursday at Colorado . . . The Brewers traded third baseman Bill Hall to the Mariners for minor league pitcher Ruben Flores . . . Yankees pitcher Ian Kennedy, 24, likely will pitch next month in the instructional league, his first game action since surgery May 12 to remove an aneurysm from beneath his right biceps . . . Two sources in Major League Baseball familiar with the Nationals’ plans said assistant general manager Mike Rizzo, who has been acting as the team’s GM this season, will officially be named to the title today. Jim Bowden resigned from the position March 1 . . . The Pawtucket Red Sox extended their losing streak to nine games, dropping a home doubleheader to the Rochester Red Wings, 6-0 and 5-1.

Report: Memphis to vacate 38 wins
The University of Memphis will be forced to vacate the NCAA-record 38 victories from its Final Four season of 2007-08, according to a report by the Memphis Commercial Appeal. The newspaper, citing a source close to the situation, said on its website last night that the NCAA will release findings of its investigation into violations committed by the program today. The NCAA investigated whether someone took the SAT exam for a player on that team. Memphis was notified of potential violations in January and met with the NCAA in June. It would be the second time both Memphis and former coach John Calipari had to vacate Final Four seasons. The Tigers were stripped of their 1985 appearance and Calipari’s UMass team lost its 1996 berth . . . The Orlando Magic announced the signing of free agent guard Jason Williams. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Williams retired in September 2008 after playing a season for the Miami Heat, averaging 8.8 points per game . . . In the WNBA, Lindsay Whalen scored 7 of her 20 points in the fourth quarter as the host Connecticut Sun rallied to beat the New York Liberty, 74-69 . . . Lisa Leslie’s 28 points powered the Los Angeles Sparks to a 78-63 home win over the Minnesota Lynx.

Querrey stuns Roddick in Cincinnati
Andy Roddick suffered a stunning upset only two weeks from the start of the US Open. Sam Querrey matched the fifth-ranked Roddick shot for shot and made the biggest ones in a pair of tiebreakers, setting up a 7-6 (11), 7-6 (3) second-round win at the Cincinnati Masters in Mason, Ohio. The top four seeds - Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic - won in straight sets . . . Dinara Safina, the No. 1-ranked woman in the world, made an early exit from the Toronto Cup, shocked by 39th-ranked Aravane Rezai of France, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Kane indicted on assault, theft charges
Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane was indicted on misdemeanor assault and theft charges after he was accused of beating up a cab driver over a fare dispute in Buffalo. The grand jury dismissed a more serious felony charge of second-degree robbery. Kane, 20, and his cousin, James Kane, 21, were arrested Aug. 9 after 62-year-old cabbie Jan Radecki told police they attacked him when he said he didn’t have 20 cents in change for the fare . . . The Carolina Hurricanes signed former Bruins center Stephane Yelle, 35, to a one-year deal worth $550,000.

Sky Blue FC reaches WPS title game
Keeley Dowling scored in the 30th minute, lifting Sky Blue FC to a 1-0 win over Saint Louis Athletica in the WPS Super Semifinal in Fenton, Mo., earning a spot in Saturday’s championship game against the Los Angeles Sol at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. . . . In MLS, Mike Magee had a goal and an assist to help the Los Angeles Galaxy overcome the absence of David Beckham and beat the Chicago Fire, 2-0, at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Ill. Beckham was serving a one-game suspension for a red card . . . Boston Cannons midfielder Paul Rabil was named the 2009 Warrior Offensive Player of the Year in Major League Lacrosse.
