Iverson, Grizzlies agree on contract

The Grizzlies confirmed yesterday they have agreed in principle to a contract with Allen Iverson, hours after the guard tweeted he was heading to Memphis. Iverson, 34, will become the highest-profile player ever to put on a Grizzlies uniform. The Grizzlies hope the first overall draft pick in 1996 and the league MVP in 2001 can draw fans and provide scoring off the bench for a franchise that went 24-58 and tied for the fifth-worst record in the NBA last season . . . The Hornets agreed to trade reserve point guard Antonio Daniels and a 2014 second-round draft pick to Minnesota for forward Darius Songaila and guard Bobby Brown . . . Ronny Turiaf had a double-double and Tony Parker added 17 points to help France beat defending champion Russia, 69-64, in Warsaw and finish the group phase undefeated at the European Championships . . . Anna Montanana’s putback with 28.6 seconds gave the Minnesota Lynx a 75-72 WNBA victory over the Detroit Shock.

BASEBALL
Giants to move carefully on Lincecum
The Giants said they aren’t going to rush Tim Lincecum back into the lineup even though their staff ace has shown improvement after back spasms forced him to miss his start Tuesday night . . . Indians outfielder Grady Sizemore had arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow. Sizemore is scheduled to undergo lower abdominal surgery Wednesday in Philadelphia . . . Dodgers lefthander Randy Wolf will miss his next start with elbow irritation . . . Righthander Jake Peavy threw a bullpen session but is still unsure whether he will make a start for the White Sox this season . . . The Twins activated lefthander Francisco Liriano (arm fatigue) off the 15-day disabled list and will use the former starter out of the bullpen the rest of the season . . . The Orioles acquired lefthander Sean Henn from the Twins for a player to be named or cash . . . The Newark Bears said former Cy Young award winner Dwight Gooden will be hired as senior vice president of the Atlantic League franchise today. A team spokesman said Gooden, 44, will be a community ambassador.

Arkansas players won’t face charges
Three University of Arkansas basketball players who were investigated after a female student claimed that she was raped at a fraternity party will not face charges. Prosecutor John Threet said there was insufficient evidence that an assault occurred . . . An attorney for former Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie says Gillispie is considering entering a rehabilitation program in Houston following his arrest on a drunken-driving charge last month . . . Former Boston College stars Terry Driscoll (1966-69) and Rich Shrigley (1978-82) and ex-coach Gary Williams will be among the inductees to the New England Basketball Hall of Fame Oct. 9 in Uncasville, Conn. . . . The defending national champion University of Connecticut women open their season by hosting the Huskies of Northeastern Nov. 14 . . . Alysa Auriemma, daughter of UConn coach Geno Auriemma, has been hired by the Hartford Courant as a freelance writer to blog about her father’s team.

Alabama’s Saban has deal extended
Alabama coach Nick Saban received a three-year contract extension through Jan. 31, 2018 that doesn’t include a salary hike but rewards him for staying put and guarantees that he will remain among college football’s five highest-paid coaches . . . Mississippi running back Dexter McCluster spent Tuesday night in the hospital because of flu symptoms as the virus continued to sweep though the team . . . A pair of quarterbacks, Holy Cross senior Dominic Randolph and Saint Anselm freshman Michael Pierce, collected the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston’s Gold Helmet Awards. Randolph threw for 414 yards and two fourth-quarter scores in a 20-7 win over Georgetown. Pierce directed a 41-35 five-overtime victory over Plymouth State. He went 32 of 53, setting a school record with 374 passing yards and four TDs.

Hudler’s move to Moscow is approved
The International Ice Hockey Federation approved the transfer of Jiri Hudler from the Detroit Red Wings to Dynamo Moscow. The 25-year-old Czech forward has been at the center of a dispute between the NHL and Russia’s KHL, which have ongoing disagreements over transfers and respecting contracts . . . Ice Edge Holdings formally has pulled out of the bidding for the bankrupt Phoenix Coyotes. The departure leaves the NHL and Canadian billionaire James Balsillie as the only bidders for the franchise, which is to be sold at auction today and tomorrow . . . Former world and Olympic champion Stacy Dragila, 38, has ended her 14-year pole vaulting career with a second-place finish at the DecaNation track and field meet in Paris . . . J.R. Celski easily won the 1,500 meters at the US short track speedskating national championships in Marquette, Mich., beating Apolo Anton Ohno . . . Luciano Emilio scored in the 39th minute as host D.C. United took a 1-0 victory over the Kansas City Wizards in an MLS game . . . Jim Ruschioni and Paul Nunez captured their fourth career Massachusetts Senior Four-Ball Championship on the first playoff hole at the Bay Club at Mattapoisett. Nunez’s 15-foot birdie putt provided the victory.
