BASEBALL
The ax that has hung over Astros manager Cecil Cooper for months finally fell yesterday when the former Red Sox first baseman was fired with 13 games left in Houston’s second disappointing season in three years. Third base coach Dave Clark was named interim manager of the team that was 70-79 under Cooper after last year’s 86-75 finish earned him a contract extension through 2010. General manager Ed Wade said more changes could be coming for a franchise four years removed from its only World Series appearance. Cooper, 59, the fourth major league field general dismissed this season, replaced Phil Garner at the helm Aug. 27, 2007, and leaves with a 171-170 overall record . . . Blue Jays shortstop Marco Scutaro will likely miss the rest of the season after tearing the plantar fascia in his right heel while charging a grounder Sunday against the Rays.BASKETBALL

Injury bug bites ranked football teams
Injuries ended the seasons of major contributors on two Top-10 teams. Second-ranked Texas lost middle linebacker Jared Norton to shoulder surgery, while No. 8 Boise State will be without running back D.J. In addition, Sean Lee, star linebacker for No. 5 Penn State, is day to day with a sprained left knee and Michigan (No. 23) center David Molk is out 4-6 weeks after surgery for a broken foot. Texas coach Mack Brown said he expects Norton, who had six tackles in the Longhorns’ season-opening win over Louisiana-Monroe, to apply to the NCAA for a medical redshirt to get another year of eligibility. Harper has rushed for 292 yards and three touchdowns on 44 carries . . . Former Buckingham, Browne and Nichols star Adam Farkes, who transferred from Maine to Texas A&M-Commerce after last season, passed for a school-record 447 yards and four touchdowns in Saturday’s 76-56 loss to Eastern New Mexico . . . Harvard soccer captain Andre Akpan was named national player of the week after scoring twice as the Crimson (5-0) beat Fairfield, 4-1, Saturday . . .
