Delonte West returned to the Cleveland Cavaliers after missing the first two days of training camp. West practiced with his teammates yesterday after missing the first four practices. West called the absences unexcused, but said he’s been in contact with general manager Danny Ferry. A team spokesman said Ferry will address West’s situation tomorrow at the team scrimmage at the University of Akron. West could still face a league suspension after he was recently arrested for gun possession in Maryland . . . The Washington Wizards say Gilbert Arenas has missed scrimmages at training camp because of a finger injury - not because of any problems with his surgically repaired left knee. Arenas sat out a scrimmage for the second consecutive day, although he did participate in drills.

Fever win to get even with Mercury
Tamika Catchings fell one rebound shy of the first triple-double in WNBA finals history as the Indiana Fever beat the Mercury, 93-84, in Phoenix to square the best-of-five series, 1-1. Catchings had 19 points, 11 assists, and 9 rebounds to help the Fever steal home-court advantage with the next two games in Indianapolis, beginning with Game 3 Sunday. The WNBA defensive player of the year for the third time, Catchings also harassed league MVP Diana Taurasi into a 7-for-22 shooting night. Taurasi finished with 20 points . . . Atlanta’s Angel McCoughtry was voted the WNBA rookie of the year and Marynell Meadors was named coach of the year after leading the Dream to a remarkable turnaround in the franchise’s second season. Atlanta went from 4-30 in 2008 to 18-16, finishing second in the Eastern Conference to earn a playoff berth. McCoughtry led rookies with 12.8 points and 2.2 steals per game . . . Highly touted Cal freshman forward Tierra Rogers will not play for the Golden Bears after being diagnosed with a rare heart condition and having a defibrillator implanted Thursday. Cal said Rogers’s condition was discovered as the result of a Sept. 21 workout in which she had trouble breathing and collapsed at Haas Pavilion outside the training room.

Wickmayer to face anti-doping tribunal
US Open semifinalist Yanina Wickmayer will be questioned by a local anti-doping committee in Brussels for allegedly failing to report her whereabouts to anti-doping investigators three times over the past 18 months, her spokesman said. “She did not miss a doping control,’’ Rudi Kuyl said in a telephone interview, but he conceded Wickmayer may not have fulfilled all the requirements of the World Anti-Doping Agency’s requirement that she let them know her whereabouts at all times for out of competition testing . . . Defending champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga won a three-tiebreaker match against Ernests Gulbis, 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-2), to advance to the quarterfinals of the Thailand Open in Bangkok. Shanahan, Devils suddenly part ways
Veteran forward Brendan Shanahan left the New Jersey Devils after being told he would not be a part of their top three lines this season. Shanahan, who has 656 career goals, was informed that he was not in the Devils’ plans. “I have decided not to continue with the New Jersey Devils for my 22d NHL season,’’ Shanahan said in statement, adding the decision was mutual and amicable . . . Osvaldo Martinez Pizarro, a Florida Marlins prospect wounded in a drive-by shooting in Puerto Rico, was the innocent victim of gangsters battling for control of drug distribution in public housing projects, police said.
