The manager with the most wins in Florida Marlins history will be given a chance to increase his total. Fredi Gonzalez will return in 2010, the Marlins said yesterday, ending two days of speculation about his status. The Marlins, however, will seek a new pitching coach to replace Mark Wiley, who has been offered a different position in the organization. . . Iverson out with injured hamstring
Allen Iverson’s debut with the Memphis Grizzlies will have to wait. The guard strained his left hamstring during a scrimmage Sunday in Birmingham, Ala., and he was ruled out of the Grizzlies’ opening preseason game last night against Washington and tonight’s home game against Oklahoma City . . . Atlanta Hawks’ Joe Johnson, the team’s three-time All-Star, top scorer and captain, plans to play out the final year of his contract this season and enter free agency instead of accepting the team’s offer of a four-year, $60 million extension . . . The Charlotte Bobcats are exercising the third-year option in guard D.J. Augustin’s contract for the 2010-11 season. Augustin will make $2.1 million next season . . . The NBA is still planning to play a regular-season game in London before the 2012 Olympics are hosted by the British capital, although commissioner David Stern said that no schedule has yet been set.Tennessee’s Negedu to sit out season
Tennessee forward Emmanuel Negedu, a sophomore from Nigeria, will not play or practice during the 2009-10 season but will remain on scholarship after suffering sudden cardiac arrest last week. Negedu underwent surgery to have a cardiac defibrillator implanted in his chest . . . Former Northeastern standout Jose Juan Barea, now with the Dallas Mavericks, was named to the Colonial Athletic Association Silver Anniversary team. Barea is the school’s No. 2 all-time scorer with 2,290 points . . . The Great Lakes Valley Conference says it has banned Southern Indiana’s men’s team from postseason play because of five alleged NCAA violations reported by the school. Coach Rick Herdes resigned and the Screaming Eagles forfeited their entire 2008-09 season in May after two players were declared ineligible.Tennis
Serena wins, will regain No. 1 ranking
Serena Williams reclaimed her No. 1 ranking with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Ekaterina Makarova in the second round of the China Open in Beijing. Williams will move to the top rankings next week by finishing better than current No. 1 Dinara Safina at the tournament. Safina lost to local wild card entry Zhang Shuai in the second round Monday. Maria Sharapova rallied for a 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 7-5 win over Victoria Azarenka, and Peng Shuai upset defending champion Jelena Jankovic, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. Fourth-seeded Elena Dementieva beat Melinda Czink, 6-4, 6-3. In men’s play, defending champion Andy Roddick lost to qualifier Lucasz Kubot, 6-2, 6-4, and top-seeded Rafael Nadal delivered a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win over wild card Marcos Baghdatis. James Blake stopped Florian Mayer, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 . . . Tebow practices, not cleared to play
Florida quarterback Tim Tebow has returned to practice on a limited basis, though he still has not been cleared to play Saturday against No. 4 LSU. Tebow suffered a concussion in Florida’s last game against Kentucky Sept. 26 when his head slammed into a teammate’s knee after he took a hard hit to the chest . . . Jay McGee of New Bedford has been named to the American Football Association Semi-Pro Football Hall of Fame . . . The Montreal Canadiens bolstered their defense by signing veteran Marc-Andre Bergeron to a one-year contract. Bergeron, known for his booming slap shot, had 14 goals - seven on the power play - and 18 assists in 72 games last season . . . The US Anti-Doping Agency said cyclist Mitch Comardo has accepted a two-year suspension after testing positive for several prohibited substances . . .
