Detroit forward Johan Franzen is out for at least four months with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Franzen was injured in the Red Wings’ 3-2 victory over Chicago Blackhawks Thursday. Franzen scored the winning goal in the second period . . . Blues defenseman Barret Jackman was placed on injured reserve with a sprained left ankle, suffered in the team’s 4-2 loss to Atlanta Thursday . . . The Blues said a three-story escalator at the Scottrade Center would remain shut down during an investigation into why it malfunctioned, injuring 13 people following the team’s home opener Thursday. Four adults and a child were taken to hospitals with minor injuries . . . Kings’ Garcia to have surgery on arm
Sacramento Kings swingman Francisco Garcia will require surgery today after breaking his right forearm while lifting weights. The Kings gave no timeline for when he might return. Last month, Garcia fractured his right ring finger . . . Delonte West and Jamario Moon will miss today’s Cavaliers’ exhibition against Charlotte. West has missed practices this week with excused absences as he tends to personal issues; Moon had wisdom teeth extracted.Baseball
Tigers part ways with coach Van Slyke
First base and outfield coach Andy Van Slyke will not be returning to the Detroit Tigers. The team announced Van Slyke “decided to pursue other opportunities’’ and will not come back next season. The Tigers invited back five coaches for 2010: Rafael Belliard, Jeff Jones, Rick Knapp, Gene Lamont, and Lloyd McClendon . . . Former Washington Nationals manager Manny Acta said he’s been contacted by the Houston Astros about their managerial opening . . . New Toronto Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos shook up his front office. Former assistant GM Tony LaCava was hired as director of player personnel, Charlie Wilson was named director of minor league operations, and former Double A manager Doug Davis became minor league field coordinator.Football
So. Miss punter critical after shooting
Peter Wilkes, a walk-on punter at Southern Miss, is in critical condition at a Memphis hospital after being shot at his home in Union City, Tenn. Regional Medical Center officials said Wilkes was being treated in a critical care unit. Union City Assistant Police Chief Perry Barfield said the case is under investigation as an accident or self-inflicted gunshot wound . . . Tyler McNamara broke a 14-14 tie with an 18-yard field goal with 10:15 left and Bentley (6-1) defeated Southern Connecticut State, 17-14, in Waltham.Miscellany
Cohen pulls out of 1st Grand Prix event
Olympic silver medalist Sasha Cohen withdrew from the Trophee Eric Bompard in Paris, the first Grand Prix figure skating event of the season, because of tendinitis in her right calf . . . Three South African track associations want the country’s top officials in the sport to resign over the gender dispute involving world 800-meter champion Caster Semenya . . . Bernard Hopkins, 44, is returning to the ring Dec. 2 in his hometown of Philadelphia to fight Enrique Ornelas in a light heavyweight bout he hopes will lead to a rematch with Roy Jones Jr. early next year . . . Star filly Rachel Alexandra is finished racing for the year, announced owner Jess Jackson, who added the 3-year-old sensation will race again in 2010.
