The Yankees may go with a three-man rotation against the Angels in the AL Championship Series. CC Sabathia is scheduled to start Friday night’s opener, with A.J. Burnett and Andy Pettitte the other two starters. “It looks like we have some rain in the forecast, so that can change things,’’ manager Joe Girardi said. “We are definitely considering possibly going to a three-man rotation in this round, but we’ll have to take a look at it and see how it goes.’’ A shortened rotation would allow Girardi to keep Joba Chamberlain and Chad Gaudin in the bullpen . . . Joe Torre has one more year on his contract and says he doesn’t plan to manage the Los Angeles Dodgers after it expires . . . Indians general manager Mark Shapiro and assistant GM Chris Antonetti began interviewing candidates by phone but are keeping their search for Eric Wedge’s successor as manager confidential. USC’s Johnson may leave hospital
Southern Cal tailback Stafon Johnson could leave the hospital today, just over two weeks after his neck was crushed in a weightlifting accident. Coach Pete Carroll said Johnson is on schedule to be taken home for further care and rehabilitation. Doctors have praised the senior’s remarkable progress after the accident, which left his throat and larynx almost completely crushed by a weight bar . . . Idaho linebacker Tre’Shawn Robinson has been reprimanded by Western Athletic Conference commissioner Karl Benson for throwing a punch in the Vandals’ 29-25 victory over San Jose State last weekend . . . Georgia Tech point guard Moe Miller continues to suffer the effects of a concussion he suffered in a car wreck last month. Coach Paul Hewitt says Miller told him that he felt “off-balance’’ while practicing “a little bit’’ on Monday . . . Louisville forward Terrence Jennings expressed remorse following his arrest at a southern Indiana restaurant over the weekend. Police have asked prosecutors to charge Jennings and senior guard Jerry Smith with battery, disorderly conduct and resisting law enforcement.Basketball
Arenas, Wizards fined for media snub
The NBA is making Gilbert Arenas - and the Washington Wizards - pay for his silence. Arenas and his team were fined $25,000 apiece by the league because he has not been talking to the media during the preseason, including before and after exhibition games. Arenas told a reporter he would speak again only after the NBA tells him he has to talk . . . Disgruntled Golden State swingman Stephen Jackson asked to relinquish his title as captain during a meeting with Warriors coach Don Nelson and general manager Larry Riley . . . The Phoenix Mercury said All-Star guard Cappie Pondexter underwent successful surgery on her right eye, which she injured in last week’s WNBA championship game against the Indiana Fever. Officials with the WNBA champions say the procedure was done to prevent retinal detachment . . . The Fever will remain in Indianapolis for the 2010 season, despite speculation that ownership would not keep the team, according to a letter to fans posted on the team’s website.Gymnastics
American McNeill third in qualifying
Tim McNeill made an impressive debut at his first major international competition, finishing third in qualifying at the world championships in London. Jonathan Horton, a double medalist at last summer’s Beijing Olympics, was fifth after a fall on pommel horse. Japan’s Kohei Uchimura easily lived up to his status as favorite, his qualifying score of 90.925 more than 1.5 points better than Maxim Deviatovski of Russia. McNeill (88.775), Britain’s Daniel Keatings (88.4) and Horton (88) were within a point of each other.Miscellany
Austrian ski star Maier retires at 36
Austria’s Hermann Maier fought back tears in announcing his retirement at age 36, ending one of the most successful careers in Alpine skiing. His nearly 14-year career would have been remarkable enough with two Olympic gold medals, three world titles, four overall World Cup crowns and 54 World Cup victories. But Maier also nearly lost a leg - and his life - in a motorcycle accident in 2001 and returned to competition . . . Georges Laraque of the Montreal Canadiens is apologizing after appearing in an advertisement that violates NHL rules regarding alcohol . . .
