Minnesota forward Kevin Love fractured a bone in his left hand during the Timberwolves’ 94-90 preseason loss to the Chicago Bulls last night and will likely miss about six weeks. Love banged his hand against teammate Oleksiy Pecherov’s elbow trying to go for a rebound on a missed free throw late in the third quarter and fractured the fourth metacarpal. He hopes to return at the end of November or early December . . . A ruling by a New Jersey judge set the stage for a second manslaughter trial for former NBA star Jayson Williams, whose lawyers argued that a racial slur and other misconduct by the prosecutor’s office should result in dismissal. State Superior Court Judge Edward Coleman upheld Williams’s convictions for covering up the shooting death of a hired driver in 2002 and rejected attempts to dismiss a retrial early next year on the manslaughter charge . . . A Los Angeles judge said former Clippers general manager Elgin Baylor, 75, must provide the Clippers with documents that supports his age and racial discrimination lawsuit against the team . . . The Magic and coach Stan Van Gundy were fined $35,000 each for his criticism of referees.Football
Ravens’ Lewis fined $25,000 for hits
The NFL fined Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis $25,000 for two separate plays, including a helmet-to-helmet hit on Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco after an incomplete pass. The league deemed that Lewis “unnecessarily kicked the opponent’’ and later “unnecessarily struck a defenseless receiver’’ . . . The winless Buccaneers traded defensive end Gaines Adams to the Bears for a second-round pick in the 2010 draft. Adams was the fourth overall pick in the 2007 draft out of Clemson . . . Detroit quarterback Matthew Stafford, who missed four of five practices with a right knee injury, is listed as questionable against Green Bay . . . Freshman Dion Lewis ran for 180 yards and two touchdowns and Pittsburgh ended four years of frustration against Rutgers with a 24-17 victory in Piscataway, N.J.Hockey
Red Wings’ Franzen has knee surgery
Red Wings forward Johan Franzen underwent successful surgery to repair a ligament in his left knee. The team said Franzen is expected to miss at least four months because of the injury sustained Oct. 8 against Chicago . . . Blue Jackets defenseman Jan Hejda, who is expected to miss 4-6 weeks with a sprained left knee, was placed on injured reserve retroactive to Oct. 13.Auto racing
Busch rolls 7 in Nationwide
Kyle Busch shrugged off walking pneumonia to dominate the Nationwide Series race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C., for his seventh victory of the year, extending his points lead to 195 over Carl Edwards with four races remaining. Mike Bliss was second, followed by Dave Blaney and Brian Vickers. Edwards finished fifth to drop 195 points behind Busch . . . Last week’s crash dropped Denny Hamlin from sixth to ninth in the Chase for the Championship heading into tonight’s race. As more quit, Nadal advances
Rafael Nadal advanced to the semifinals at the Shanghai Masters, benefiting from yet another retirement when Ivan Ljubicic became the eighth player to quit while playing in the tournament this week. The match ended, 3-6, 6-3, when Ljubicic retired with a left hip injury. Nadal will face Feliciano Lopez, who eliminated ninth-seeded Robin Soderling, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3. Novak Djokovic beat Gilles Simon, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2. Djokovic will next play Nikolay Davydenko, who defeated Radek Stepanek, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 . . .
