Gymnastics
A year later and half a world away, China is still the team to beat. The Chinese won three more titles at the World Gymnastics Championships yesterday in London, giving them a total of six. That’s as many as the other 70 countries won - combined. Their total of nine medals was tops, too. “Our team performed very well,’’ said Deng Linlin, who took the title on balance beam. “It’s perfect success.’’ Wang Guanyin won the gold on parallel bars, while Zou Kai added a world title to his Olympic gold medal on high bar. Beth Tweddle gave the home crowd a thrill by winning gold on floor exercise, the second world title for Britain’s most beloved gymnast. The Americans won just one medal yesterday, a bronze on balance beam by Ivana Hong. They leave with five, all by the women, including a gold-silver finish in the all-around.

Davydenko surprises Nadal in Shanghai

The sixth-seeded Davydenko broke decisively in the sixth game of the second set to collect his 18th career title. His flat groundstrokes and angled winners denied the Spaniard a sixth title for this year and his first since the Rome Masters in May. Yanina Wickmayer won her second career WTA Tour title, defeating Petra Kvitova, 6-3, 6-4, in the Generali Ladies final in Linz, Austria . . . Button finishes fifth, clinches F1 title
Jenson Button clinched his first Formula One title by capitalizing on his rivals’ miscues to finish fifth in a Brazilian Grand Prix won by Mark Webber. The fifth-place finish in Sao Paulo gave Button an insurmountable 17-point lead in the drivers’ standings ahead of the season-ending race in Abu Dhabi on Nov. 1. His closest competition for the title, Brawn GP teammate Rubens Barrichello, started from the pole but finished eighth after a puncture on his home track. Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel, the other driver who had a shot at the title entering the race, was fourth. Red Bull’s Webber took his second F1 win in 1 hour 32 minutes 23.081 seconds, ahead of Robert Kubica of BMW Sauber and defending champion Lewis Hamilton of McLaren.
