Florida suspends Spikes for half-game

Top-ranked Florida will be without star linebacker Brandon Spikes for the first half of Saturday’s game against Vanderbilt. Coach Urban Meyer suspended Spikes yesterday, two days after the defensive captain apparently attempted to gouge the eyes of Georgia running back Washaun Ealey in a 41-17 victory. Spikes issued a statement apologizing for what he did. The Southeastern Conference said it reviewed and accepted the discipline handed down by Florida . . . Syracuse’s Mike Williams, one of the top receivers in the country, has quit the team. Williams, who did not play last year because of academic problems, was suspended for Syracuse’s game against Akron nine days ago for violating team policy. He is tied with Marvin Harrison for second in TD catches at Syracuse with 20, two off Rob Moore’s school record . . . Quarterback Tony Pike will practice with fourth-ranked Cincinnati this week, but his status remains uncertain for Saturday’s game against Connecticut because of an injury to his non-passing arm. He’s missed the last two games . . . Holy Cross (7-1) climbed four spots to No. 13 in The Sports Network’s Top 25 poll after beating Fordham, 41-27, Saturday. New Hampshire (7-1) remained eighth. Bentley (8-1) moved up one spot to 24th in the AFCA Division 2 Coaches poll.

Irish’s Harangody heads up AP team
Notre Dame senior forward Luke Harangody was the leading vote-getter on the Associated Press’s preseason All-America basketball team. Harangody was joined by Kansas teammates Cole Aldrich and Sherron Collins, Patrick Patterson of Kentucky, and Kyle Singler of Duke . . . Junior forward Trevor Mbakwe, one of Minnesota’s touted new recruits, will not be allowed to play for the 25th-ranked Gophers until his pending court case on a felony aggravated battery charge is cleared up. Mbakwe faces a December trial for an alleged attack on a woman in Miami in April . . . Defending national hockey champion Boston University (2-3) dropped three spots to No. 7 in the USCHO.com/CBS poll. Yale (1-0) moved up one place to sixth, receiving one first-place vote. UMass-Lowell is eighth, Vermont 15th, Boston College 16th, and Massachusetts 19th.

Judge OK’s sale of Coyotes to league
The Phoenix Coyotes’ bumpy six-month journey through US Bankruptcy Court has come to an end with a judge’s approval of the sale of the franchise to the NHL. The NHL’s bid totals about $140 million. “The league also will engage immediately in a process to identify - and expedite sale of the franchise to - new ownership that is committed to the club’s long-term success in the Phoenix/Glendale area,’’ NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said . . . The Capitals said Alex Ovechkin is “week-to-week’’ with an upper-body injury . . . Flyers winger Simon Gagne is expected to miss the next 6-8 weeks after having abdominal and hip surgery . . . Ducks defenseman James Wisniewski was suspended for two games for a hit on the Coyotes’ Shane Doan.

Bucks’ Redd to miss at least 2 weeks
Bucks guard Michael Redd is out for at least two weeks after straining a tendon in his left knee during Milwaukee’s home opener. Redd tore two ligaments in the same knee Jan. 24 and missed the rest of last season. General manager John Hammond also said he’s decided not to pick up a $2.76 million option on forward Joe Alexander’s first NBA contract. Alexander was the eighth overall pick in last year’s draft . . . Richard Hamilton will miss a third straight game with a sprained right ankle tonight when the Pistons host the Magic . . . Knicks guard Nate Robinson could miss two weeks because of a sprained right ankle . . . Mavericks assistant coach Popeye Jones is free on bond after being arrested on a drunken-driving charge in suburban Dallas over the weekend . . . Hall of Famer Bill Walton won’t return as an analyst for ESPN’s NBA coverage, saying “it is time to dedicate the rest of my life to service.’’ He missed most of last season while recovering from back surgery.

Golfer suspended for doping violation
Doug Barron, a 40-year-old journeyman who lost his tour card three years ago, became the first player to be suspended by the PGA Tour for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance. Barron has been suspended for one year. The PGA did not disclose what drug Barron used . . . Lanny Wadkins, Jose Maria Olazabal, and Christy O’Connor Sr. were inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine, Fla. . . . David Beckham will return to AC Milan on loan in January after the Italian club reached an agreement with the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer. The England midfielder played for Milan for six months in the first half of the year. Beckham will rejoin the Galaxy when the summer transfer window opens in July . . . Landon Donovan, the Galaxy midfielder, FC Dallas’s Jeff Cunningham, and the Revolution’s Shalrie Joseph were the top three candidates for Major League Soccer’s MVP award after voting by league players, general managers, coaches, referees, and media. The Revolution’s Steve Ralston is a finalist for the Fair Play Award . . . Roger Federer made a winning return from a six-week break, beating Olivier Rochus, 6-3, 6-4, at his hometown Swiss Indoors tournament in Basel . . . Five members of the Boston Cannons - attack Ryan Boyle, midfielders Kevin Cassese and Paul Rabil, and defensemen Ryan McClay and Kyle Sweeney - were named to the US National lacrosse team that will compete in the 2010 world championships in Manchester, England, in July.
