Nancy Lieberman is set to become the first female head coach of an NBA Development League team. A news conference is scheduled for today to introduce Lieberman as the first coach of the team that will begin play during the 2010-11 season in Frisco, Texas, a suburb north of Dallas . . . Jerome Dyson and two other Connecticut players missed the Huskies’ 106-67 exhibition win over AIC last night because of problems with their eligibility paperwork. The school said it hopes to have the issues surrounding the eligibility of Dyson and Donnell Beverly resolved as early as today. UConn said it is waiting for the NCAA to finish a “routine educational document review for eligibility certification.’’ The school says the NCAA eligibility center has requested some academic records of freshman Jamal Coombs-McDaniel and has not granted him the initial clearance to play . . . Former NBA referee Tim Donaghy is a free man after serving most of a 15-month sentence in a gambling scandal . . . The Pacers will honor their late co-owner Mel Simon with a jersey-retirement ceremony before tomorrow’s game against Washington. Simon died in September at the age of 82.

Gators’ Spikes will miss entire game
Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes has had his team suspension for apparently trying to gouge the eyes of a Georgia running back increased to a full game. Spikes will miss Saturday’s contest with Vanderbilt . . . The replacement for the Cotton Bowl game has been lined up. Dallas city leaders say the Dallas Football Classic is planned for New Year’s Day 2011. The first game likely will pit teams from the Big 12 and Big Ten. The plan needs NCAA approval, and would run through the 2013 season. The Cotton Bowl game is moving to the new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington this season . . . Harvard junior tailback Gino Gordon and Coast Guard freshman quarterback Jon Resch earned this week’s Gridiron Club of Greater Boston Gold Helmet awards from the New England Football Writers. Gordon became the first Crimson player to rack up 100 yards rushing (119) and receiving (103) in a game, piling up 222 yards on 12 touches in a 42-21 Ivy League win over Dartmouth. Resch came off the bench to set a number of school records in a 76-49 New England Football Conference loss to Maine Maritime, throwing for 469 yards and six touchdowns on 34-of-46 passing.

Job lost amid Flames’ swine flu shots
A senior staff member for Alberta Health Services has been fired for giving the Calgary Flames swine flu shots while thousands of people waited in line for the vaccine last week . . . Alex Ovechkin has been termed “week to week’’ by the Capitals because of an upper-body strain, but the two-time NHL MVP could potentially play at Florida tomorrow . . . Thrashers goaltender Kari Lehtonen is expected to miss six to eight weeks after having a second surgery on his back . . . The Ontario Hockey League suspended Michael Liambas of the Erie Otters for the season after a hard check sent an opposing player to the hospital with skull and facial fractures. Liambas, 20, hit Ben Fanelli, whose helmet flew off as he fell unconscious to the ice. The 16-year-old Fanelli was taken to a hospital in critical condition. His status has been upgraded to serious but stable . . . Natalie Darwitz scored twice to help the United States beat Sweden, 3-2, and set up a final against Canada in the Four Nations Cup in Vierumaki, Finland.

Dodger pitcher accidentally shot in leg
Dodgers pitcher Vicente Padilla is recovering from a bullet wound in his leg after a target shooting instructor accidentally shot him in Nicaragua . . . Cubs lefthander Ted Lilly had surgery on his left shoulder and no timetable has been set for his return . . . Tigers third baseman Brandon Inge underwent surgery on both knees. The procedure involved the repair of the patellar tendons. Inge is expected to be ready for the start of spring training in February.

Citing fatigue, Kim to skip Dubai finale
Golfer Anthony Kim says he will not be going to the Dubai World Championship to compete for the $7.5 million bonus pool, even though the American has easily qualified. Kim says he did a poor job of scheduling this year, and he’s ready to go home. “I need the week off,’’ he said . . . Greg Norman’s slower-than-expected recovery from shoulder surgery will force him to miss next month’s Australian Open . . . San Jose will host the 2012 US Figure Skating Championships . . . IndyCar officials are expected to announce that Izod will become the series’ title sponsor next season. . . . Toyota is pulling out of Formula One racing, the world’s largest automaker announcing that it needs to cut costs and focus on its core business. Toyota made its F1 debut in 2002 but never won a grand prix.
