Sacramento's Martin opts for surgery

Sacramento Kings leading scorer Kevin Martin will be sidelined for about two months after deciding to undergo surgery on his injured wrist. The team said Martin will have the operation on his left wrist Monday and is expected to miss at least eight weeks. Martin, who is averaging 30.6 points a game, has a nondisplaced hairline fracture of the navicular bone . . . Bulls forward Tyrus Thomas broke his left forearm during a weight training session and will have surgery today. He could miss 4-6 weeks . . . New Orleans Hornets owner George Shinn said he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, but is otherwise healthy and is optimistic he will conquer the disease. Shinn, 68, has been the owner of the team since he received an expansion franchise in Charlotte, N.C., in 1988.

US women beat Canada in Four Nations
Meghan Duggan scored the winner in the second period and the United States beat Canada, 3-2, in their final group game of the Four Nations Cup in Vierumaki, Finland. The US team took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Natalie Darwitz and Hilary Knight before Canada tied it . . . The United States beat Russia, 6-3, at Summerside, Prince Edward Island, and will play for the gold medal at the 2009 World Junior A Hockey Challenge. The United States jumped to a 3-0 first-period lead on goals by Connor Brickley, Shane Berschbach, and Jeff Costello. The other US goals were by Nick Mattson, Beau Bennett, and Colten St. Clair . . . Lou Lamoriello, who has spent more than two decades building the New Jersey Devils into a top organization, will be recognized for his achievements Monday when he’s enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Lamoriello ran the hockey program at Providence College - coaching such players as Ron Wilson, Brian Burke, and Bob Nicholson. He’s being inducted as a builder in one of the Hall’s strongest classes. Joining him are Steve Yzerman, Luc Robitaille, Brett Hull, and Brian Leetch - all in their first year of eligibility . . . Tampa Bay Lightning rookie Victor Hedman will not be in the lineup for today’s game against the Montreal Canadiens following a body check from Ottawa’s Chris Neil that left him flattened on the ice in Thursday’s game.

Hair-pulling soccer player suspended
New Mexico junior defender Elizabeth Lambert was suspended indefinitely after yanking the ponytail of Brigham Young’s Kassidy Shumway, who went crashing to the ground during the Lobos’ 1-0 loss in a Mountain West Conference semifinal game Thursday in Provo, Utah. “My actions were uncalled for,’’ Lambert said in a statement released by New Mexico. “I let my emotions get the best of me in a heated situation.’’ . . . Guards Jerome Dyson, a senior starter, and Donnell Beverly, a junior reserve, have been cleared to play this basketball season for No. 12 Connecticut. The school’s compliance department gave the OK after going over documents submitted by them as part of a review of the program . . . The Stanford Cardinal will be without top linebacker Clinton Snyder for the rest of the season after he suffered a knee injury earlier in the week.

Federer, Djokovic reach Swiss semis
Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic reached the semifinals of the Swiss Indoors in Basel, staying on course to meet in the final. Federer cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win against qualifier Evgeny Korolev and Djokovic pulled out a 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 victory over Stanislas Wawrinka. Federer will play wild-card Marco Chiudinelli, who beat Richard Gasquet, 6-1, 6-3. Djokovic will meet fifth-seeded Radek Stepanek, who beat Marin Cilic, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Gasquet will go before the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland Tuesday for failing a drug test in March. He says the positive test for cocaine resulted from a kiss he gave a woman . . . American Shani Davis shattered the course record in winning the 1,000-meter race at the season-opening speedskating World Cup in Berlin. Davis clocked 1 minute 8.53 seconds for an overwhelming win over Yevgeny Lalenkov of Russia, who was second in 1:09.11 . . . In Las Vegas, four-time world champion Joel Casamayor and three-time champ Zab Judah both earned victories in their returns to the ring: Casamayor, 38, earned a unanimous decision over Jason Davis in their super-lightweight bout, and, in the co-main event, Judah, a former welterweight champ, stopped Ubaldo Hernandez 35 seconds into the second round.
