Yankees Jeter, Teixeira win Gold Gloves
Steady Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter won his fourth Gold Glove, joining New York first baseman Mark Teixeira among the American League players rewarded for fantastic fielding. Angels center fielder Torii Hunter and Mariners right fielder Ichiro Suzuki both won for the ninth straight season. First-time winners included Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria, Baltimore outfielder Adam Jones, and White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle. Minnesota catcher Joe Mauer and Detroit second baseman Placido Polanco each earned their second award . . . Sammy Sosa says a cosmetic cream he uses to soften his skin is the reason for his lighter skin tone. The former Cubs slugger was photographed at the Latin Grammy awards in Las Vegas last week with a noticeably whiter face. Sosa says he has been using the cream for a long time, and combined with bright TV lights, it made his face look whiter than it really is. Heat owner confident Wade will stay
Even with the free agent bonanza of 2010 looming, Miami owner Micky Arison believes Dwyane Wade will stay with the Heat. While he was “disappointed’’ that a contract extension wasn’t agreed to in the offseason, Arison said he has “every indication’’ Wade wants to remain in Miami for the duration of his career . . . Magic center Dwight Howard has been fined $15,000 by the NBA for publicly criticizing officials on his blog. The comments were posted after the Magic’s loss to Detroit last week . . . Al Cervi, who was the 1947 scoring champion and MVP as a guard for the Rochester Royals and coached the Syracuse Nationals to the 1955 championship, died in upstate New York at age 92. Seton Hall has suspended Keon Lawrence indefinitely after he was charged in a wrong-way crash. Police said Lawrence has been charged with driving while intoxicated and driving with a suspended license. State police said the 22-year-old Lawrence hit another vehicle early Monday after driving the wrong way on the Garden State Parkway near Sayreville, N.J. Lawrence was treated for severe facial cuts, and the driver of the other car suffered non-life-threatening injuries . . . The NCAA said Jeff Jordan, the oldest son of Michael Jordan, will miss the first two games of the season for No. 23 Illinois after playing in an unsanctioned event last summer . . . Arkansas suspended guards Courtney Fortson and Stefan Welsh indefinitely, guard Marcus Britt for six games, forward Glenn Bryant two games, and walk-on guard Nick Mason during the fall semester, for violating unspecified team rules.Swimming
Phelps 3d in medley, misses 2 finals
Michael Phelps finished third in the 100-meter medley at a World Cup short-course meet after missing out on two other finals in Stockholm. Phelps swam the medley final in 52.14 seconds. South Africa’s Gerhard Zandberg won in 51.77. Phelps failed to qualify for the finals of the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke. China’s Jing Zhao’s 25.82 seconds in the 50-meter backstroke beat the world mark of 26.17, set by Marieke Guehrer of Australia four days ago. Felicity Galvez of Australia set a world record in the 100-meter butterfly, clocking 55.46 seconds, and Kaio Almeida of Brazil broke the men’s 200-meter butterfly record, clocking a 1:49.11.Miscellany
Michigander is youngest WSOP winner
A 21-year-old Michigan poker professional who chose cards over college won the World Series of Poker main event in Las Vegas early Tuesday, winning $8.55 million and becoming the youngest player to win the tournament in its 40-year history. Joe Cada of Shelby Township, Mich., turned over a pair of nines early after Darvin Moon, 46, called his all-in wager with a suited queen-jack, setting up an about-even race for most of the chips on the table . . . Rory McIlroy has decided to join the PGA Tour next year with hopes of moving up in the world ranking. McIlroy, a 20-year-old from Northern Ireland, said he will be competing against stronger fields in the United States, which should make him a better golfer. He already is No. 17 in the world, despite turning pro only two years ago . . . . . .
