Shawn Leonard is closing out his football career at the University of Rhode Island with a flourish.

The senior wide receiver from Stoughton hauled in a career-high 10 catches and three touchdowns in the Rams’ 55-42 shoot-out loss at 8th-ranked New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon, and his 275 receiving yards represented the third-best single-game total in school history and the fifth-highest receiving total in the annals of the Colonial Athletic Association.

His second touchdown of the afternoon was a 72-yard reception, a 1-yard slant pattern which the 6-foot-2, 210-pound Leonard (inset) turned into the Rams’ longest offensive play from scrimmage this season.

“A great play call, a screen, the offensive line got out in front; my job was easy, I just ran to daylight,’’ said Leonard, who was honored as the CAA co-Offensive Player of the Week. “We had a chance to win the game, we just have to do a better job of finishing.’’

URI first-year coach Joe Trainer said: “We had a ton of big plays and certainly Shawn Leonard was a big part of that with his offensive production.’’

Leonard, who has 411 receiving yards and five touchdowns in his last three games, leads the 1-8 Rams in catches (36), receiving yards (593), and touchdowns (7).

Rhode Island, which has lost eight straight since opening the season with a win over Fordham, plays at Maine on Saturday.

NU’s Petta wins dual awards
Devin Petta delivered a historic freshman season for the Northeastern women’s soccer team. The former Whitman-Hanson standout was selected as Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year by the Colonial Athletic Association, the first woman in conference history to take both awards simultaneously.

In her remarkable season, Petta (inset) scored 14 goals and seven assists for 35 points in 18 games, breaking the longstanding Northeastern record for points in a season and matching the single-season goal and assist records. Petta’s scoring ranks second in the nation among freshmen, and her points per game average (1.94) is 11th overall among Div. 1 women soccer players.

Sophomore goalie Stephanie Gordon of Rockland, who led the league in save percentage (.875), while making 105 saves and earning six shutouts, was a second-team pick. Her 12-2-2 regular season record is the best of a goalkeeper in school history. Junior midfielder Kristen Blake of Canton was named to the third team.

NU finished 12-4-3 after losing to James Madison in the conference semifinals.

Boretti gets goals that win
Marshfield High grad Nicholas Boretti powered the Eastern Connecticut State University men’s soccer team to its second Little East title in three years, netting the lone goal in a 1-0 win over University of Massachusetts at Boston. The senior cocaptain was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player after scoring game-winning goals in each of the team’s shutout wins in the playoffs. He also scored the first goal last Wednesday in a 2-0 win over Rhode Island College.

With its eighth straight win, Eastern (16-4-1) tied the 40-year-old program record for wins in a season and earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Division 3 tournament. The Warriors will play Rensselaer in a first-round match Saturday in Troy, N.Y. . . .

The Wheaton College women’s soccer team will make its 10th consecutive NCAA Div. 3 appearance, traveling to Middlebury College to take on Richard Stockton College of New Jersey in a first-round match. The Lyons (17-3-2) ripped off a seven-game unbeaten streak before falling to MIT, 1-0, in the NEWMAC semifinals. Senior back Lindsey McManus of Marshfield has played a pivotal role in a Wheaton defense that has registered 15 shutouts while contributing seven goals - including three game winners - and nine assists.
