Commissioner Bud Selig said yesterday it’s too soon to determine whether a blood test for human growth hormone can be used for minor leaguers. Selig said Dr. Gary Green, the sport’s outside expert, and other medical staff were examining the data. Selig can start blood testing on players with minor league contracts at any time. Testing on players on 40-man major league rosters is limited to urine, and rules can’t be changed without an agreement with the players’ association . . . A sports doctor at the center of drug investigations in Canada and the United States said he treated Alex Rodriguez after the Yankees slugger had hip surgery last year and prescribed anti-inflammatories but not HGH. Dr. Anthony Galea also told the Associated Press an assistant who was stopped at the US-Canadian border last year was carrying only a minuscule amount of HGH - which Galea said was for his own use. The doctor reiterated that he has never given the drug to an athlete . . . Yankees closer Mariano Rivera threw 34 pitches during his first batting practice session. Rivera has taken a slower approach at spring training for the past few years. He’ll make the first of his eight or nine game appearances early next week.

Martin hopes to return by season’s end
Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin will receive platelet rich plasma therapy on his left knee and is expected to return before the end of the season . . . Nuggets coach George Karl will miss tomorrow night’s game at Minnesota as he undergoes another round of cancer treatment. He hopes to be back on the sideline Friday night when the Nuggets travel to New Orleans . . . The Heat practiced again without suspended point guard Rafer Alston, whose tenure with the club appears to be over . . . The Grizzlies have recalled rookie center Hasheem Thabeet from the Dakota Wizards of the NBA Development League after less than two weeks in the minors . . . Donovan McNabb (Syracuse), Terrell Owens (Tennessee-Chattanooga), and Antonio Gates (Kent St.) will face Hakeem Olajuwon, Kenny Smith, and Rick Fox in an episode of Spike TV’s “Pros vs. Joes,’’ which features NFL players that played college basketball against former NBA stars . . . Purdue forward Robbie Hummel had reconstructive surgery on the ACL in his right knee . . . Bob Nash was fired as coach at the University of Hawaii after posting a 34-56 record over three seasons.

Revolution to give 3 midfielders a try
Europe-based midfielders Marko Perovic (FC Basel) and Gareth Williams (Watford) will join the Revolution on trial when the team trains in Cary, N.C., tomorrow through March 21. Both players are under contract, but would be granted a free transfer to sign with MLS, according to a team source. Also working out will be Ecuadoran midfielder Andres Raad, 26. Perovic, 26, played for Red Star Belgrade before joining Basel in 2007. Williams, 29, was transferred to Leicester City from Nottingham Forest in 2004, before joining Watford in 2006. Also training with the team will be former Revolution midfielder-striker Khano Smith and former Providence College goalkeeper Tim Murray. FRANK DELL’APA

Ping, Tour reach deal; wedges banned
The 20-year-old Ping wedges with square-shaped grooves will no longer be allowed on the PGA Tour starting March 29 under an agreement reached with Ping executives. The waiver takes effect the week after the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill and will apply on the PGA Tour, Champions Tour, and Nationwide Tour. It will not apply to amateur competitions . . . Reebok says its tip line and $10,000 reward for Sidney Crosby’s missing Olympic glove and stick are producing everything from encouraging comments to claims of “potential information.’’ . . . Maine has suspended goaltender Scott Darling indefinitely for a violation of team rules. Darling is 15-6-3 this season for the Black Bears, who open the Hockey East playoffs with a best-of-three series against UMass-Lowell . . . Chile has secured a spot in the Davis Cup tennis quarterfinals after Fernando Gonzalez defeated Dudi Sela of Israel, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3, to give the South Americans an unbeatable 3-1 lead in their first-round home series in Coquimbo. Chile will face the Czech Republic in the next round . . . Former Formula One driver Stirling Moss has broken both ankles and hurt his back in a fall down an elevator shaft at his London home. The 80-year-old Briton was taken to the Royal London Hospital on Saturday after falling three floors.
