Veteran winger Jamie Langenbrunner is returning to Dallas after the last-place New Jersey Devils traded their captain to the Pacific Division-leading Stars. Langenbrunner was drafted by the Stars in 1993 and was part of their only Stanley Cup title in 1999. He was traded to New Jersey in 2002 and was a member of the Devils’ Stanley Cup-winning team in 2003. New Jersey gets a conditional third-round draft pick this year that could become a second-round pick if the Stars win a first-round playoff series or if they re-sign Langenbrunner, 35, who can become an unrestricted free agent this summer . . . Tom Cavanagh, who played for Harvard and was in the San Jose Sharks organization briefly, was found dead in the parking garage of the Providence Place mall Thursday. He was 28 . . . Haley Scarupa and Layla Marvin had hat tricks to lead the US national team to a 14-1 rout of the Czech Republic in the semifinals of the International Ice Hockey Federation world women’s under-18 championships in Stockholm. Garrigus owns lead after second round Robert Garrigus, the biggest hitter on the PGA Tour, is leading the Tournament of Champions in Kapalua, Hawaii, thanks to one of the shortest clubs in his bag. Garrigus holed out a wedge for eagle on the 16th hole, then followed that with two big drives to set up easy birdies for a 10-under 63 and a one-shot lead at the season-opening event. Garrigus was at 14-under 132 and will be in the final group with Carl Pettersson, who birdied the last hole for a 67. Jonathan Byrd shot 68 and was another shot behind . . . British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen shot a 6-under 67 in brutal wind to move within a stroke of the lead at the midway point of the Africa Open in East London, South Africa. Oosthuizen trails a trio at 10-under 136, Branden Grace, Miles Tunnicliff, and Markus Brier . . . Brittany Lincicome will play in a men’s tournament next week as part of her preparations for the LPGA season. Lincicome, a three-time LPGA Tour winner, entered the NGA Hooters Tour’s Bridgestone Winter Series event in Tavares, Fla.Tennis
Davydenko defeats Nadal to reach final Weakened by a fever earlier in the week, Rafael Nadal lost to defending champion Nikolay Davydenko, 6-3, 6-2, in a Qatar Open semifinal in Doha. Davydenko will face No. 2 Roger Federer in today’s final. Federer beat third-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) . . . Top-seeded Tomas Berdych beat Blaz Kavcic, 6-3, 6-3, to advance to the semifinals of the Chennai Open in India. Stanislas Wawrinka, Janko Tipsarevic, and Xavier Malisse also reached the last four . . . Top-seeded Robin Soderling beat Matt Ebden, 6-3, 6-2, to reach the semifinals of the Brisbane International. Soderling will face Radek Stepanek, who beat Florian Mayer, 6-3, 6-3. Andy Roddick will face Kevin Anderson in the other semifinal . . . Venus Williams lost to China’s Li Na, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), at the Hong Kong Classic in her only warm-up event for the Australian Open . . . Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin will play for Belgium against the US in the Fed Cup next month in Brussels. Globe’s Ryan repeats as nation’s best The National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association named The Boston Globe’s Bob Ryan national sportswriter of the year for the third straight year.
