The Reds traded struggling outfielder Jonny Gomes to the Nationals yesterday for two minor leaguers, lefthander Chris Manno and outfielder Bill Rhinehart. Gomes was part of the Reds’ surge to the NL Central title last season, but slumped badly this year. He’s batting .211 with 11 homers and 31 RBIs . . . The Diamondbacks reinstated closer J.J. Putz from the 15-day disabled list and placed infielder Geoff Blum on it with a broken right pinkie finger. Putz missed 19 games with elbow tendinitis after being placed on the DL July 1 . . . The Rockies placed Jason Giambi on the 15-day DL, a day after he strained his left quad running to first base in a loss to the Dodgers . . . Orioles lefthander Mike Gonzalez began serving a three-game suspension for throwing behind the Red Sox’ David Ortiz in a July 10 game at Fenway Park. He will miss his team’s series against the Blue Jays . . . The Tigers outrighted the contract of third baseman Brandon Inge to Triple A Toledo.Hockey
Draper, 40, makes retirement official Forward Kris Draper announced his retirement after 20 seasons in the NHL, the last 17 with the Detroit Red Wings. He will remain in the organization in a still undefined front-office capacity. Draper, 40, played 1,137 games with the Red Wings, fifth in franchise history behind Gordie Howe, Steve Yzerman, Alex Delvecchio, and Niklas Lidstrom . . . Oilers goalie Nikolai Khabibulin withdrew an appeal to his drunken-driving conviction, accepting a 30-day jail sentence . . . The Penguins signed veteran forward Jason Williams to a one-year contract worth $600,000 . . . Former NHL coach Andy Murray signed a five-year contract to coach at Western Michigan.Colleges
Ohio State, Pryor separation complete Ohio State made it official that former Buckeyes quarterback Terrelle Pryor could not have played at any time during the 2011 season and also banned him from any contact with the school’s athletic program for the next five years. The letter ended speculation that Pryor had not met the NFL’s requirements for a supplemental draft . . . South Carolina assistant G.A. Mangus was suspended by coach Steve Spurrier after being arrested in Greenville, S.C., on nuisance conduct charges after officers saw him urinating on a downtown street . . . LSU athletic director Joe Alleva decided to stay put despite overtures from Tennessee.Two reserve wide receivers leave BC Boston College is still a couple of weeks away from training camp and the Eagles are already down two wide receivers. Coach Frank Spaziani confirmed that Clyde Lee and Shakim Phillips are no longer in school. “Clyde had some academic issues and Shakim is transferring,’’ said Spaziani. Lee had 17 receptions and one touchdown as a sophomore while Phillips had only one reception as a freshman.

Skier Peterson found dead after suicide Olympic silver medal freestyle skier Jeret “Speedy’’ Peterson was found dead in a remote canyon in Utah in what police are calling a suicide. Peterson, who won his silver medal at the Vancouver Games, called 911 before shooting himself, police said. He was 29. One of the sport’s most colorful athletes, he was troubled away from the slopes. Peterson, who was cited for drunken driving last Friday in Hailey, Idaho, was dismissed from the 2006 Turin Olympics after a drunken brawl . . . Asjha Jones scored 22 points, Tina Charles had 21, and the Connecticut Sun won their fourth in a row, beating the Chicago Sky, 77-66, in a WNBA game in Rosemont, Ill. . . . Angel McCoughtry scored a career-high 37 points as the Atlanta Dream held off the Shock, 76-68, in Tulsa . . .
