Johan Santana’s next minor league rehab start is likely to be pushed back a day because the Mets ace didn’t feel as strong as he would like during his latest side session. He pitched three scoreless innings Thursday for Class A St. Lucie in his first outing since shoulder surgery last September. The lefthander threw 26 of 33 pitches for strikes and allowed two hits against the Daytona Cubs. Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said Santana threw on the side yesterday, but didn’t feel great, so the team plans to move his next scheduled appearance with St. Lucie from tomorrow to Thursday . . . Giants lefthander Barry Zito is back on the disabled list with a recurrence of the right foot sprain that landed him on the DL earlier this year. He is 3-4 with a 5.62 ERA in nine starts. The Giants also announced that second baseman Freddy Sanchez will undergo season-ending labrum surgery today on his right shoulder . . . The Dodgers put righthander Rubby De La Rosa on the DL with elbow inflammation. De La Rosa was 4-5 in 10 starts, posting a 3.71 ERA over 60 2/3 innings . . . The Royals put struggling righthander Kyle Davies on the disabled list with “a right shoulder impingement.’’ Davies is 1-9 with a 6.75 ERA in 13 starts . . . The Braves placed reliever Scott Linebrink on the DL with a lower back strain. Linebrink is 4-2 with one save and a 2.95 ERA in 50 appearances . . . The Mariners placed reliever Chris Ray on the DL with a strained right shoulder. Ray is 3-2 with a 4.68 ERA in 29 games . . . The Twins activated outfielder Denard Span from the DL. He had been out since June 9 because of a concussion . . . The Nationals unconditionally released infielder first baseman Matt Stairs, 43, after designating him for assignment last week.Details released in beating of Giants fan One of two suspects accused of beating a Giants fan March 31 outside Dodger Stadium kicked the victim several times in the head even though he was unconscious after being punched, prosecutors allege. Authorities for the first time provided details of the allegations against Louie Sanchez and co-defendant Marvin Norwood, who are charged in the beating of Bryan Stow, who remains hospitalized with a brain injury . . . Robert Seamans, 27, who died in May while trying to slide down a railing at a Rockies game, had marijuana and alcohol in his system. An autopsy report said the amount of alcohol was twice the legal limit for driving. The Denver medical examiner’s office says the drug and alcohol mix was a “significant’’ factor in his death.

Chelios, Tkachuk, Suter to enter US Hall Chris Chelios, Keith Tkachuk, and Gary Suter were selected for induction into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame. They were joined by Flyers founder and current owner Ed Snider, along with play-by-play announcer Mike Emrick. Chelios played 26 seasons with Montreal, Chicago, Detroit, and Atlanta. Tkachuk, of Melrose, played nearly two decades and is one of just four American-born players to score 500 goals. Suter spent most of his 17 seasons with Calgary and helped the Flames win the Stanley Cup in 1989 . . . The Sharks signed newly acquired defenseman Brent Burns to a five-year, $28.8 million contract extension . . . The Canucks hired Craig MacTavish to coach their AHL affiliate in Chicago. He coached the Edmonton Oilers for eight seasons before being fired in 2009. He spent the last two seasons as a TV analyst for TSN . . . Voters rejected a referendum to borrow $400 million for the construction of a hockey arena and ballpark in Uniondale, N.Y., as a replacement for the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum before the Islanders’ lease expires in 2015. Without a new building, the team’s owner, Charles Wang, has said he may have to move off Long Island. The referendum failed, 33,526 to 24,553, in what was called a very low turnout for the unusual midsummer election.MISCELLANY
QB Garcia reinstated at South Carolina South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia is officially back on the team - again. Coach Steve Spurrier said Garcia had completed what he was asked to do to return after the fifth suspension of his college career. Garcia was banned in April from all team activities after displaying what athletic director Eric Hyman called “behavior that is unacceptable for one of our student athletes’’ . . . Suspended South Carolina quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus will return for opening practice after being suspended last week when he was charged with nuisance conduct in Greenville, S.C., for public urination . . . Mardy Fish withdrew from the
