Avery accused of shoving police officer Rangers forward Sean Avery is out on $20,000 bail after he was arrested in California on allegations he shoved an officer at his Hollywood Hills home. A noise complaint sent police to the home at around 1 a.m. yesterday. Lieutenant Jorge Pardo said Avery answered the front door, shoved an officer, and slammed the door, but cooperated when officers knocked a second time. The officer wasn’t injured, but the 31-year-old Avery was booked on suspicion of battery on a police officer and released about seven hours later . . . Phoenix signed forward Patrick O’Sullivan to a one-year deal. The 26-year-old played 31 games with Carolina and Minnesota last season, collecting two goals and six assists.

Pitino extorter files federal appeal The woman convicted of trying to extort Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino asked a federal appeals court to overturn her conviction and seven-year prison sentence. Attorneys for 51-year-old Karen Cunagin Sypher filed a brief with the US 6th Circuit Court of Appeals, claiming there was a broad conspiracy involving Pitino, the federal trial judge, and Sypher’s former attorney to ensure she would be found guilty . . .
