SAPPORO, Japan—Japan's Daisuke Takahashi won the NHK Trophy on Sunday, finishing comfortably ahead of compatriot Takahiko Kozuka after a solid free skate.

Takahashi, first after the short program, received 169.32 points in the free skate to finish with a total of 259.75 points, 24.73 points ahead of Kozuka. Ross Miner of the United States placed third with 212.36 points.

Takahashi fell on his opening quadruple flip and was downgraded on two jumps late in his routine but was strong otherwise to successfully defend his NHK title.

Brandon Mroz of the United States, who was third after the short program, had a mistake-filled free skate and finished last with 184.83 points.
