Dad defends his son in French rugby fight
BIARRITZ, France—The father of a French rugby player has apologized after running onto the field during a professional match to join a fight involving his son.
France national team player Imanol Harinordoquy, a 6-foot-4, 243-pound forward who plays for Biarritz, was involved in an altercation with Jean-Jo Marmouyet of Bayonne in Tuesday's game between the Basque rivals.
Harinordoquy's 62-year-old father, Lucien, left the stands to join the melee and squared up to Marmouyet.
Another Bayonne player, Benjamin Boyet, threw the bespectacled father to the ground and stood over him with a fist raised before other players intervened. The father was escorted away and tried unsuccessfully to return to the field.
Bayonne president Michel Cacouault said Wednesday he'll file a complaint against Lucien Harinordoquy, who works as a livestock trader.
