SAN DIEGO—Edward Cheserek edged Futsum Zeinasellassie by one second in a race of undefeated runners to win the Foot Locker National Cross Country Championship on Saturday.

Molly Seidel used a late surge to overcome Erin Finn to win the title by two seconds.

Cheserek, from St. Benedict's Prep School in Newark, N.J., and Zeinasellassie ran together from the midway point of the 5,000-meter race. Cheserek took the lead near the end to finish in 14 minutes, 52 seconds.

Zeinasellassie, from North Central High in Indianapolis, also finished second last season to two-time champion Lukas Verzbicas.

Seidel, from University Lake High in Hartland, Wis., passed Finn for good with less than 400 meters, clocking 17:22 to Finn's 17:24.
