CHICAGO—Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith says the arrest of wide receiver Sam Hurd is a disappointment and "total surprise."

Hurd was arrested Wednesday and charged with trying to set up a drug-dealing network in the Chicago area. Smith said Thursday that Hurd was still a member of the Bears for now. Smith says there was no reason to believe Hurd had problems when the Bears signed him before the season.

Authorities arrested Hurd with a kilogram of cocaine during a sting at a Chicago restaurant. A criminal complaint says Hurd was first identified as a potential drug dealer over the summer as the NFL lockout was ending. Federal prosecutors say Hurd wanted to buy five to 10 kilograms of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana to distribute in Chicago.
