PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Brown University has named a Providence native as its new athletics director.

The Ivy League school announced Thursday that Jack Hayes will take over as director of athletics on July 1. He is currently director of athletics at Hofstra University.

Hayes will succeed Michael Goldberger, who announced his plans to retire in December.

Brown says Hayes was appointed after a national search.

Hayes will oversee 37 varsity teams, their coaches and 17 intercollegiate teams that compete at the club level. The Department of Athletics and Physical Education also manages the university's athletic facilities, organizes exercises classes for faculty and staff and supports an intramural program.

The school is also about to open a new athletic complex that includes an aquatic center, fitness center and varsity strength and conditioning facility.
